COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

PUTRAJAYA CAMPUS
ASSIGNMENT

SPECIAL SEMESTER 2017 / 2018

PROGRAMME : Bachelor of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Honours)

Bachelor of Electrical Power Engineering (Honours)
Bachelor of Computer & Communication Engineering
(Honours)

SUBJECT CODE : EEEB253

SUBJECT : Electromagnetic fields and waves

SUBMISSION DATE : 12th April 2018 (Thursday, 5 pm)

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:

1. This assignment covers CO7 (appreciate legal issues of EMF radiation) and CO8
(appreciate health and safety issues of EMF radiation) of your course’s PO6 (apply
reasoning in assessing societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the
consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice).

2. This is a group assignment in which five (5) to six (6) students are assigned to each
group.

3. Group leaders are required to make an appointment and meet the course lecturer @
BN-2-009 and transfer (thumb drive) the softcopy of their video latest by 12th of
April, 5 pm.

THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF 4 PRINTED PAGES INCLUDING

Question [5 MARKS]

You will be working in your assigned group to research a topic and communicate your
findings in a five (5) minutes video for your classmates (target audience). You may
consider to include the following:
1.0) Outline of Video:
1.1) Title – UNITEN logo, course name & code, group member names &
student ID. number and section. Note: indicate clearly that this
assignment is intended to assess CO7 and CO8.
1.2) Background – definition & introduction to electromagnetic fields
(EMF) radiation. Malaysian standard for controlling exposure to time
varying electric, magnetic and EMF. International standards by WHO
and ICNIRP. Investigate the role of SIRIM in regulation of EMF in
electrical appliance.
1.3) Problem Statement – what is the problem that you are trying to solve?
What are the safety and health issues related to the EMF radiation? E.g.
effect of time-varying EMFs on human body produced by electrical
appliances (refer to Table 1) which are extremely low frequency (ELF)
fields and/or intermediate frequency (IF) fields. Find evidence in which
EMF radiation has affected people with multiple health symptoms,
immune system disorders and serious diseases.
1.4) Objectives – what is the output of your research? E.g. to create
awareness on the field(s) strength of the electrical appliance field on
human body, to identify the minimum/safe distance from the electrical
appliance from people, and, to identify measures / steps taken to prevent
the hazard from happening.
1.5) Discussion – magnetic field strength of household appliances (assigned
to your group only) at various distances and positions. What are the
measures / steps taken to prevent the hazard from happening?
1.6) Conclusion - suggestion / opinions on minimum distance from the
electrical appliance.
1.7) Reference [credit roll for your video] – Use IEEE referencing. Do read
more conference papers or journals in IEEE (ieeexplore.ieee.org) and
relevant websites for e.g.:

2.0) How to Begin – three separate stages:
2.1) Planning – this is the phase where you research your topic and envision
how your video will look and sound (using planning tools such as the
script and storyboard). Style – there are no restrictions on the style of
the video (i.e., you may use a narrated slide show, a recorded
advertisement, a digital whiteboard, a stop motion animation
(Claymation), a sock puppet show, animated graphics, a scripted scene,
etc.). The website www.desktop-documentaries.com provides a wealth
of information on possible storytelling techniques, basic video structure,
scriptwriting advice, and more.
2.2) Production – this means creating and collecting all the information
(e.g., images, videos, sounds, narration) you will need for the video. You
will need to do your Literature review – what is the characteristics of
electric field and/or magnetic field due to the electrical appliance. E.g.
nature of source either voltage or current, measured units (V/m or T),
measures to shield the field from people and relevant studies on field
strength with respect to (wrt.) distance from the electrical appliance.
How do you measure EMF, types of EMF radiation detector / meter?
2.3) Editing – this stage is done using video-editing software such as Power
Point, iMovie, or Movie Maker, where you stitch the information
together and synch then in time with a narration or other sounds.
3.0) Do’s and Don’ts:
3.1) I need to hear all of your voices in the video in which subtitle
indicates who is narrating.
3.2) Your video is respectful; it does not denigrate others, use offensive
language or imagery, or inappropriate humor.
3.3) Avoids distractors such as fancy transitions, tangents, and audio-
visual overstimulation.

3.4) Music does not detract from or obscure narration (i.e., avoid music
with singing, and the volume of the soundtrack should be low
compared with the narration).
3.5) File format to be submitted – your video must be submitted either
in .mp4 or .wmv format. Sample of expected video:
