English for Dentistry

Dental English courses address the increasing demand for international scientific exchange and
communication. Such courses are variously known in dental schools as Dental English, English for
Dentistry, English for Dental Medicine. Since such courses lack standardized nomenclature, they will
be referred to as dental English courses . This course aims to teach English dental terminology and
present conversational situations commonly used in the field of dentistry

General Instructional Objective (GIO) participants will learn how to communicate with English-
speaking patients on basic topics of routine dental consultation and treatment.

2.2.2 Specific Behavioral Objectives (SBOs) 1. Participants will be able to say and respond to basic
dental terms and phrases. 2. Participants will be able to understand what the patient says in English.
3. Students will be able to ask their patients about their medical and dental conditions as well as
explain dental procedures in English. 4. Particpants will be able to access and use fact sheets for
native speakers at websites, for example, international dental associations, international journals, etc.
2.2.3 Medical and Dental Terminology

(Basic) Course description The course will cover basic medical and dental terms commonly used in
general situations of daily life. Having the course right after the students graduate from high school
will complement or prepare them in improving their English skills in the health sciences. It will include
casual and formal ways of greeting, speaking and listening. Additionally, knowledge of common
general terms such as dental clinic, reception, appointment as well as medical terms such as fever,
cold, diabetes, etc. is included as it is an integral part of history- 11 taking, diagnosis, treatment and
patient-dentist or inter-professional interaction. Significant part of the course will emphasize on the
etymology of commonly used terms with a focus on overall meaning.
