Grade 2: Number Sense and Numeration

Lesson 1
Title: Adding 1 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers
Date: February 20, 2018
Time: 40 mins

Learning Goal: Students can use multiple strategies to add 1 digit and 2 digit numbers. Students will also be
introduced to math language relating to operations, such as sum, difference, left, altogether etc.

5 Minds On Students will be introduced to the problem they will need to solve.  Problem

Discuss what the problem is asking us to do (addition). Give students


a second to think about how they might solve the problem. Have
students pair up to begin working.

10 Consolidation All of the student solutions will be sorted and named on the board
(counting up, counting down, splitting, number lines etc.). Discuss
which methods are the most efficient.
*It is unlikely that students will use a number line method, so
teacher will prepare a solution in advance that can be discussed
with the class.
? Extension Present the students with another, similar problem as an exit card. Exit cards
Encourage them to consult the methods posted on the board. Have
them show their answer in at least 2 different ways.
