ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES POLICY Introduction

This policy is intended to set out the correct and safe procedures to follow in the
event of an accident or incident happening.

Aim of the Policy

This policy is intended to set out the values, principles and policies underpinning
Leicester Medical Support approach to an accident, emergency or crisis. The
goals of Leicester Medical Support are to ensure that:

 all accidents and incidents are appropriately dealt with


 all accidents and incidents involving injury to staff or service users are
reported and recorded appropriately
 all accidents and incidents are fully investigated
 the results and recommendations from investigations are fully
implemented to prevent any re-occurrence of such incidents
 accident and incident records are monitored on a regular basis to inform
practice and improve safety
 Leicester Medical Support complies fully with the Reporting of Injuries,
Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR)

Policy Statement

Leicester Medical Support recognises its responsibility to ensure that all reasonable
precautions are taken to provide working conditions which are safe, healthy and
compliant with all statutory requirements and codes of practice. All accidents which
do occur will be handled by Leicester Medical Support and its staff so as to minimise
threat and injury to all, including themselves, external staff and the general public.
Accidents will also be reported and the reports acted upon by Leicester Medical
Support so that accidents can be minimised.

Procedures to be taken in the event of an Accident or Injury

1. In the event of an accident or emergency an immediate assessment must be


made as to the seriousness of injury and reported the team leader if the injury
is minor and the patient is able to walk first aid procedures will be carried out
by a suitably competent person at the first aid point and the appropriate
incident or accident form completed

a) if the injury is moderate, the medics on scene will report to the team leader
and appropriate actions will be taken accordingly on scene and the
appropriate incident or accident form will be completed.
b) If the injury is severe, the medics on scene will report to the team leader and
carry out immediate assessment whilst RRV is dispatched to scene further
medics will be put on standby to assist if necessary.

2. If a patient needs to be taken to hospital, external resources will be contacted.

3. Should an ambulance need to be arranged appropriate staff member will


make the arrangements.

4. When a patient needs to attend hospital, the medic on scene should take
appropriate information about the patient i.e. date of birth, home address, next of kin,
any medication being taken etc. if possible.

5. The medic should ensure that they contact relevant staff as soon as possible
to inform them of the incident and eventual outcome.

6. All accidents should be recorded on appropriate forms and filed at the end of
each day to the office. It is the responsibility of all staff to note down the details of
any accidents that happen to them or to public to the office. It is the responsibility of
all staff to report and record in the accident book.

7. Additionally, serious accidents should also be entered in the RIDDOR book


and a copy forwarded as indicated. Any reportable and dangerous occurrence will
be reported to the Registered Manager at the office.

8. Where a member of staff needs to be taken to hospital, their emergency


details must be taken and friends or relatives notified through the emergency contact
numbers.

9. Incidents where no injury has been sustained but which have identified a
potential risk must also be reported and recorded.

10. Managers must monitor and analyse accident and incident records on a
regular basis. This information should be used to inform practice and improve
safety.

11. People under the influence of alcohol or drugs are a hazard to themselves
and the public must be reported. If an accident is caused when a person is drunk or
on drugs it must be reported.

12. In the event of a major accident being the result of faulty equipment or
premises, then the scene of the accident must be blocked off until an investigation
has been completed by the Police and/or the Health and Safety Authority.

13. Following any accident managers will make an assessment as to the cause
and any remedial action that should be taken. All accidents to employees,
volunteers and public will be the subject of verification and an initial investigation by
the Registered Manager. This may involve disciplinary action where negligence is
found.

Accident Reporting

Accident reports are covered by RIDDOR which requires employers to:

Keep adequate records of accidents and injuries


Report fatal accidents immediately to the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) report major injuries immediately to the HSE report
Dangerous occurrences immediately to the HSE
Report specified diseases to the HSE
Report is required in the following circumstances:

1. Dangerous occurrences, should still be reported even if they do not cause


injury.

2. Notifiable diseases which include:

Cholera, food poisoning, small pox, measles mumps, tetanus, whooping cough
and others.

Procedures

A written record should be kept of any accident, however minor, that occurs at
Leicester Medical Support.

Note: Fatal accidents, major injury accidents/conditions and dangerous


occurrences must be reported immediately by telephone to the enforcing
authority by the Chief Officer or nominated deputy and followed up by the
appropriate form.

There is a legal requirement that written records of reportable accidents and


dangerous occurrences be kept for a minimum of three years.

It is Leicester Medical Support policy that all records should

include:

the date, time and place of incident that occurred

the name, address of the injured or ill person
details of the injury/illness and what first aid was given
the name and signature of the first aider or person dealing with or
witnessing the incident

The responsibility for the implementation and management of this policy is


held by:
