Detailed Daily Lesson Plan

Teacher(s): Miranda Craft

Subject: Science

Grade: 4

Unit Topic: Can You Sense It?

Lesson number: 1 of 10

Title: Paper Bag Challenge

Overview/Annotation: I will provide paper bags, each filled with an object. Students
will pick up each paper bag and record characteristics of the object in a table I have
provided them. Students will use the five senses to make a prediction about what is in
each bag. After all students have recorded characteristics on their tables, I will show
them each object. They will have an opportunity to see if they guessed the objects
correctly.

Content Standard(s):
SCI.ES 4.3

Primary Learning Objective(s):

Students will use the five senses to identify objects.
Students will sort data into a table to show the characteristics of different objects.

Approximate Duration of the Lesson:

30 Minutes

Materials and Equipment:

Paper bags
Objects to be put in paper bags (crayon, candle, bell, book, small bottle of water, air
freshener, tube of toothpaste)
Table (provided)
Pencil
Picture cards corresponding to the characteristics that the objects might have -

Background/Preparation:
I have already given pre-assessments to see what students know about the five senses.
All students except for my focus student did well on the pre-assessments. I have
worked with my focus student to help her understand the five senses more in order to
do this first activity. I taught her to use simple words such as smell, hear, taste, touch,
see because she had difficulty understanding some of the vocabulary I used. Students
should be able to use their five senses. They must be able to communicate with the
teacher and other students. They should be able to write. If students need help writing,
I will be their scribe.
For the lesson, I will already have paper bags ready with objects in each of them. I will
have these paper bags set up on my table as an attention getter. I will also create a
table that students will use during the lesson to write down the characteristics of Bag
1,2,3, etc.

Procedures/Activities:
Students will come to my small group table where paper bags are already set up. I will
have to make this very exciting because my focus student has serious difficulty with
transitioning. I will explain to students that we are going to complete a fun activity
using our five senses. “You are going to use your five senses to try to guess what objects
are in each of these bags. After you have picked up each bag and smelled, touched,
shook, and looked at them, you will write down characteristics of the objects that you
observed in this table (I will show them the table at this point). If you are not able to use
one or more of your senses, it is okay because some of them only require you to use two
senses to figure it out. We will not taste any of the objects because none of them are
edible.” At this point, I will give students the tables and allow them to begin. I will stay
close to my focus student to help her with anything she needs assistance with such as
writing and finding the correct words to say to describe the objects. I will also have a set
of picture cards to help her identify whether an object is round or if it has edges, squishy
or hard, noisy or no noise, etc.) I will also scribe for her when she gets ready to write in
her table. After students have had a chance to observe each bag and record
characteristics in their tables, I will have them come back to the small group table.
There, I will take each object out of each numbered bag so students can compare their
observations and predictions to the actual objects. I will prep students for the next
lessons by explaining that we are going to take the data they collected in their tables
and turn that data into a bar graph. Finally, I will give students an index card with the
question, “What sense did you use the most?”

Assessment Strategies:
At the end of the activity, I will give students an index card with the question, “Which
sense did you use the most?” This will help me be able to see if students are familiar
with the names of the senses and if they are able to figure out based on their tables
which one they used the most.

Accommodations: (As Needed)

During the lesson, I will stay close to my focus student to make sure she is able to use
the correct simple vocabulary that I taught her. I will also provide picture cards for her
to use during the activity that will assist her in determining different characteristics of
objects. When she gets to the writing part of the lesson where she records
characteristics in the table, I will scribe for her. If she gets to a point where she is tired of
observing the bags, I will cut the assignment down to wherever she is at that point.

Modifications: (As Needed)

No modifications to this lesson are needed.
