Gilkes turbines are built for today and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow ...
FRANCIS TURBINE EXPERTISE
Gilkes experience in reaction type water turbines

goes back to 1856 when we manufactured Vortex,

low specific speed, double discharge turbine to

Professor Thompson’s design. This unit operated

for over 100 years before being placed in a

museum. Our first Francis turbine was built in

1902 for installation in Brazil.

Design for Purpose

Gilkes Francis range includes 8 different specific speed designs. The Hydro team at Gilkes can advise on the best

solution for your project.

The extensive range of Gilkes turbines (Francis, Pelton and Turgo Impulse) enable us to offer the optimum solution for

your particular application

GILKES FRANCIS TURBINE Flow control is effected by opening or closing the guide

vanes. This is effected by hydraulic or electric actuators

ARRANGEMENT controlled by either a speed govenor for stand alone duty

Gilkes Francis Turbines are available in two or a PLC for parallel operation with distribution grid.

basic configurations: Horizontal & Vertical

High Head Applications
Spiral cased units Gilkes is one of the few suppliers Worldwide who can
offer Francis turbine solutions on heads up to 400m.
Water from the pipeline enters the spiral case case and is

directed by a series of movable guide vanes to the turbine

runner. As the water passes through the runner it rotates

and the water pressure drops. Water is then discharged

through a draft tube inside the tailrace.

GILKES RANGE

GILKES FRANCIS TURBINE RANGE

Using a specifically designed selection programme,

Gilkes enter basic site details - head and flow which

then allows us to compare specific speed turbines

to determine optimum efficiency, speed and runner

diameter. Once a turbine selection has been made

the same system calculates bearing loadings,

governor capacity, runway speeds, etc.

Total annual output from various turbine selections

can be compared after entering flow duration curves.

The table is a guide to our Francis turbine range.

Continuous development allows Gilkes to regularly

improve designs and turbine performance.
