Music Section Leader Application

Mellophone

60-Minute Sectional Lesson Plan

Objectives

• Members will use the warm up time to prepare and focus on the rehearsal goals.

• Members will be able to correctly play the rhythms in measure 52 of Time/Jupiter.

• Members will demonstrate clear and correct pitches in measures 17-39 of Time/Jupiter.

• Members will work on memorization of Time/Jupiter.

Procedures

• Warmups:

• Section leaders will encourage members to begin unpacking their instruments as soon as they

arrive.

• Section leaders will explain the goals of the rehearsal to the section.

• Section leaders will encourage members to fully engage in the rehearsal, and try to let other

worries and concerns be put aside for the time being.

• Visual section leaders will lead the section in 2-3 visual warm ups that focus on techniques

used in Time/Jupiter.

• Music leaders will engage the section in a breathing warm up.

• The section will first do power breathing-taking in as much air as possible in four counts

and then pushing it out in four counts. The exercise will continue with three counts, two

counts, and one.

• The section will do the same breathing exercise using only four counts in and out. When

pushing the air out, the section will air pattern measure 52.

• The section will play a concert Bb scale using the rhythmic pattern of measure 52 on each

note. Play the scale with the same pattern, increasing the speed each time exceptional clarity

is reached, until achieving performance tempo.

• Music Rehearsal:

• The section will play measures 51 and 52 to put the rhythm in context. If there are still

problems, play the two measures on a loop. Start slowly and slightly increase the tempo each

time.

• The section will sing measures 17-33. If there are issues with pitches, they made be played

by a member of the section for clarification. The section will continue singing until all

pitches are correct.

• The section will buzz and finger measures 17-33. Just like the singing exercise, continue to

buzz until all pitches are clear.

• The section will play measures 17-33 not in tempo, but by having a section leader cue each

note. Take this time to make sure each player is on the correct partial and tune each note.

• The section will play measures 17-33 on a loop and slowly increase to full tempo.

• The section leader will rehearse measures 33-39 with the same rehearsal techniques used for

measures 17-33.

• Music Memorization:

• The section will split into two groups. Two music leaders will go with each group. One group

will focus on memorization of measures 17-50 and the other on 50-the end. The goal of
working in a smaller group is to maximize memorization and give members a more

individualized experience.

• Section leader will rehearse memorization in a big picture, small picture, big picture format.

• Will run a large chunk, measures 62-end of Time/Jupiter with music.

• The section will play from 71 to the end once with music and once without.

• The section will play from 66 to the end twice with music and twice without.

• The section will play from 62-66 twice with music and twice without.

• The section will play through 62-end once with music and once without to reinforce all

music learned. Sections will be repeated based on section needs.

• The same principles will be applied to the group learning measures 17-50.

• The groups will switch after 20 minutes.
