There Is No Place Like Home
Home is a place of security and comfort when one feels lost or in danger. Home is a safe

place, where one is isolated from violence and the attacks that can be caused outside his/her

household. After a long day of work and school, coming home can relieve the stress that comes

with the tasks an individual has to face on the daily basis. The positive aspects of tranquility and

peace are all in the essence of the use of space in an individual’s household and how they

perceive the way they live. The space in my household invokes a positive living environment

because of its features of lighting, color, and architectural design that all make it a comforting

home to live in.

The positive aspects that light provides in the space around any home can attract high-

energy levels that invoke the environment of my home to be a space of tranquility. During the

daytime, the sun’s rays illuminate my house emphasizing its peach walls and lime color lawn

warming up every square inch of my house. The Interior of my house has dark navy colored

granite floors and peach colored walls to complement each other. Throughout the day, my living

room is full of light the sun provides as it shines through the glass frame of the living room door.

Since the inside of my house has dark colored granite flooring it tends to get cold throughout the

day so I enjoy the light that comes into my living room because it provides warmth. The warmth

the sun provides with its light makes the environment inside the interior and exterior of the

household feel welcoming and comforting at the same time. The diamond chandelier hanging

above the entrance luminates the entrance and living room area when the sun shines each crystal

ball. Sometimes during the summer, it gets too hot during the day, so I pull down the blinds that

are attached to my windows to make all the rooms in my house as cool as possible. In Chloe

Taylor’s magazine article, Psychology Tomorrow, she talks about how Interior designs affect

one’s happiness. All the rooms inside my household contain windows because “The best lighting

source is, of course, the sun, so the number and size of the windows in the room can boost one’s

happiness, increase sadness or enhance anxiety” (Taylor). Upon the end of the day, the sun was

beginning to set, reflecting its last light of the day to the valley. It’s quite outdoors and I can

barely hear any cars pass by. The chirping of the crickets and the last few birds heading home are

the only sounds left outside. As I get ready for bed, I feel a sense of relief and comfort as I rest

up for a new day tomorrow. The source of light, depending on the time of day, can positively

affect both space and mood in my household throughout the day.

The different color variations in the space of my household positively bring an uplifting

feeling of comfort. My room, my favorite part of the house, is located upstairs. The light blue-

sky walls that are painted all around my bedroom walls make the environment of my room feel

calm and at peace. I decided to stick on glow in the dark planets and stars all over my wall to

replicate the solar system. It’s a very amazing experience when I’m laying down on my bed and

look up to the ceiling noticing nothing but glowing planets and millions of stars, it almost feels

like I’m not even on Earth or at home but somewhere quiet and isolated. In an online article,

Color Wheel Pro, each color has its own meaning behind what they mean and the mood they can

set towards an individual. In the article, “Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It

slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with

tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity” (1). Lighter

shades of colors tend to represent a more calmer mood compared to darker colors that can set a

more intense mood to the environment. My room, for example is painted light blue because it is

one of my favorite colors and it appeals to my emotions. Colors can perceive emotions as, “The

human eye perceives color as a stimulus in the form of light and the brain further processes that

perception with the result that feelings and emotions are evoked “(Billmeyer & Saltzman, 1981).

The color black and grey, for example, can correlate to the emotions of sadness, loneliness, and

anxiety. Lighter colors like blue, green, and yellow can have more positive emotions amongst

individuals. Overall, the color of my room brings forth a positive essence of the whole

environment where I sleep.

The architectural design of my household affects the size of its space influencing the

mood of its environment. The exterior of my house is very intricate in a sense where two roman

like pillars, in front of my doorway hold the roof to the second floor where my bedroom is also

located. The two windows that oversee the rest of my neighborhood from the top floor are

covered in black metal pullout frames that are custom made into an artsy design. With the

material my windows are made from it puts in an extra layer of protection to my house making

sure no one other than my family members can get in. The small three palm trees that are laid

down on the side of my well-manicured lawn stand still as they divide up the space amongst our

neighbors providing a form of privacy to my family and I. Multiple small cameras are also

placed outside in the corners of the roof to add in “extra eyes” while my family and I are not at

home. I interviewed my dad, Arthur Nazaryan, about why he designed the house the way it is,

and he said,” I always wanted to have a house of my own, so when I saw this house in horrible

conditions I knew that it would take a lot of work to rebuild it. At the end of all the hard work, I

was going to make it my own” (Nazaryan, qs#1). Before my dad remodeled our house, it was

burned and not in a suitable condition to move into. My first reaction when I saw the house

before it was remodeled was that the lawn looked dead. The color of grass I saw was yellow and

I instantly thought to myself the owner before probably didn’t take care of the space of this

house. After my dad fixed the house, I felt more comfortable to live in it knowing that everything

is brand new and made from scratch. The new architectural design helped improve the space and

appearance of my household making it more suitable and comfortable to live in.

Overall, the space in my house gives a positive aspect to my mood and the way my

family and I live. The layout of space in my household makes my family and I have a welcoming

home and a place to relax. The colors that are painted throughout my house were all chosen to

display nothing but good tones to the environment of our home. The lighting that is seen

everyday brightens up the whole essence of the house luminating every room in the household.

Without the new architectural design, I don’t think my house would feel as comforting and

secure as it is now.
