1. A post-tensioned I-shaped beam section, with a total depth of 400mm and cross-
sectional detail as shown in Fig.1 spanning over 12 m is stressed by successive
tensioning and anchoring of 3 cables A, B and C, as shown in Fig.1. Each cable has
cross section area of 182 mm2 and has initial stress of (1000 + Q) MPa. Derive the
expression to estimate loss due to elastic shortening and hence estimate the
percentage loss of stress in each cable due to elastic shortening. Assume modular
ratio, m = 6.

3. A 20m simply supported beam of cross section as shown in Fig. 3 is post tensioned
with a parabolic cable with zero eccentricity at the ends having an area of
(1600+Q)mm2 in a single duct. Jacking is done at one end only. All strands are
stressed simultaneously. Assume that initial stress in steel is 0.76fpk (fpk = 1860 MPa)
when the concrete is at an age of 14 days. Assume that curing is stopped at 7 days.
The only permanent sustained load is due to the self-weight of the beam. Assume Ec
= 27.6 x 103 N/mm2, Ep = 195 x 103 N/mm2, fck = 40 N/mm2, relative humidity =
70%, µ = 0.35, k = 0.0015/m. Assume normal relaxation steel and an anchorage
slip of 6mm.
(a) Find the immediate losses of prestress in the tendons and plot the variation
along the length.
(b) Find the long-term and total losses (at midspan) at 30 days, one year, five years
and 70 years, as per IS 1343: 2012 estimates and plot the variation with time.
(c) Find the ultimate strength of the member using strain compatibility method.
