1.0 INTRODUCTION

The development of film industry in Malaysia has persistently undergoes its phases
according to the world’s vast movement. In subsequent with democratization in alliance,
globalisation is primitive in attention to receive mass volume of economic resources whilst
free trade market became an idea for capitalist redemption. Prior to construction of political
ideology, the aftermath has epitomised most dominant countries in West to be perceived as
the trendsetter, in benefits of globalisation towards developing countries including Malaysia.

Along the journey, Malaysian film industry has embarked its cloud silver lining
pavement in 1930s and the shift of globalisation took the industry’s pride for challenge.
Hollywood from the United States wooed the boundaries internationally since then, while
Malaysian film cogitated for a bandwagon in Hollywood’s shadow.

The fatal discussions on local film industry have been raised extensively by X and Y
generations of filmmakers. In order to scrutinise for a depth viewpoint, the definition of
Malaysia film has been reviewed overtime. Film industry in Malaysia in nowadays are
getting much better due to social conscience on its critical role and function towards societal
development as to be compared in previous decades. Malaysia film once was built upon on
its termed as Malay, therefore it was automatically regarded as Malaysian film without
inquiring official validation from authority. Rescue to the name of nationalism, Malay film
industry has gained its expansion from the government intervention for its social awareness.

Hollywood is a definite catalyst that urge societal changes in value, mostly it


indicated as catastrophic that threaten Malaysia’s societal value. The paradox drawn upon its
obstructive content which guided by religious institution, strongly hold for its criticism for
morality damage. As attempt to encounter Malaysian film, the argument is often portrayed as
government propaganda tool whereby it shuddered those significant points to be viewed as
cynical and unappreciated, until the late Yasmin Ahmad came in to the rescue, realising
‘Sepet’ movie in 2004.

Prior to her breathtakingly courage and effort embracing on ethnicity and racial
diversity issue in Sepet, the value of art and aesthetics is held up high among nation and
indigenous filmmakers to unite in preserving film industry from its dooming and glooming
battlefield. Relatively, the video project is underlying from cultural and interpretative
approach in lieu to provide multi perspective and holistic apprehension.

2.0 SHORT FILM BRIEF & DESCRIPTION

In lining to the themed cleanliness, the short film named Noorani/Nurani is derived
from Arabic word which carries the meaning of light and luminous. As it encapsulates as
bright as light, the film is perceived in terms of enlightening heart as interpretation of
cleanliness and its elements. Elements such as emotions, words, gestures, contexts, and
actions are emphasized for a ramification on certain construction in society value and
judgement.

The sentiment in Noorani short film is based on local society behaviour of


stigmatisation. Social stigma often mislead society’s thought and behaviour whereby it was
reinforced via enculturation and irrelevant reasoning for sanction and punishment. This
include taboos, moore, folks and myth. The pertaining issue has made to highlight the
circumstances due to social stigmatisation towards former convict. Social theory of labelling
and stereotyping undermine local society’s consciousness in which much to be left skewed,
however, the video represents both positive and negative circumstance to shed some light on
current social phenomenon.
