The Philosophy of Education

I believe for me to become a great teacher in the future I need to strive to teach the

students what they need to know in life. A teacher centered philosophy of education has two

majors? Essentialism and perennialism; however, I would say perennialism is a way I see myself

teaching. To shape the students’ minds around books, ideas, and concepts a way to give them the

knowledge from men and women from the past. To show how they thought, wrote and the ideas

of what a book can give us. I want the students to see how you can unlock ideas from books to

find values and moral principle that would help in life.

Student centered philosophies are less concerned for the past but they focused on what

the student needs and preparing for what could happen in the future. There is progressivism,

social reconstructionism, and existentialism, however from what I have learned is I leaned more

towards social reconstructionism. I would like to discover the social problems for our world to

analyze it and suggest how to take on it. For a class I would give lessons that give the students

that inform them and emotionally stir up their ideas for them to want to learn more on what has

or is happening to our world.

The focus of curriculum I would have are in social reconstructionism and perennialism. I

would want my students to focus on social politics and economic needs that could give them

ideas and moves them to want to pursue more into it. To make it a project to find the problems of

what they have read which it could be sexism, racism, climate change, pollution on the

environment and many more. However I also think you can’t do the project without knowing

about the past from the great books. For you need to know how it began before you can see how

to fix it for the future.

I know you need to know about other cultural education for what people do in other

country’s to see the bigger picture. I would discuss these thing with my student so they can know

that people are different in so many ways but also can be the same. I think for assessment I

would want to do research or essay on what we would go over. For the students too have enough

knowledge to be able to feel positive for a test in the end of our research or essay.

I believe in the future when I become a teacher I will set example for students. To hope

that when they come to my class that my teaching skills that I learn will help them to the path

that they will take for their goals in life. To see you need to learn from the past to know what to

do for the future. Also I gave them the knowledge to see the world in many different ways and

how to help for the future.
