A student came into Mrs.

Gupta’s
classroom and handed her a note.
Mrs. Gupta read the note and
sighed. “Mandy Wu, Carlos
Ortega, and Lacie Thomas,
please report to Principal
Wheeler’s office immediately.”
“Again?” one student
whispered to another.
“They’re always getting in
trouble.”
Principal Wheeler looked
up with a big smile when
the three friends entered
his office. “Hi, kids!” he said.
“Good luck on your mission.”
“Thank you, Mr. Wheeler,”
Mandy said. She pressed
a button hidden behind a
picture.
Whoosh! The wall slid open,
and the kids stepped inside.

 Mandy, Carlos, and Lacie were in
a secret elevator. It took them to a
hidden room in the school’s basement.
The elevator door slid open, and the
kids entered the headquarters of
Junior Spy Force. Mandy, Carlos, and
Lacie were secret agents!
Lacie turned on a video screen
hanging from the ceiling. A woman’s
face appeared on the screen. It
was the head of Spy Force, Director
Angela Stone.

 “Hello,” Director Stone said. “I have
alarming news. Agent Logan Dawson
is lost.”
Mandy, Carlos, and Lacie gasped.
“We know Logan! We’ve worked with
him,” Carlos said.
“The emergency signal on Agent
Dawson’s watch went off in a forest,” said
Director Stone. “He’s lost and needs to
be home for dinner in two hours. You
are the closest available agents. Will
you accept this mission and try to locate
Agent Dawson before his parents start
to worry?”

 Mandy, Carlos, and Lacie nodded.
“Yes, Director!” they shouted at the
same time.
“Excellent,” Director Stone said. “This
mission is top priority. Good luck!” The
video screen went blank.
“If Logan needs to be home in two
hours, we’d better move fast,” Mandy
said. She was the team’s leader. “Let’s
pack up!”
The secret agents quickly grabbed
their high-tech tool kits.
“Let’s not forget our fly boots,” said
Mandy. Fly boots were like shoes with
jet packs on them.

 Carlos held up a pair of green goggles.
“We can take these, too,” he said. “They’re
my new invention. I call them Step
Spotters. When you put them on, you can
see where people have walked, even if
their shoes didn’t leave any footprints.”
“If we want to get to Logan in a hurry,
we’d better take the Hoversonic,” said
Lacie. The Hoversonic was a boat that
traveled a few feet above the water. It
was faster than any other boat on Earth!
Lacie loved driving it.

Mandy pressed a button. A door
opened that revealed an underground
passageway. The friends hopped onto a
shuttle, which took them to a boat dock
outside town.
The three agents dashed to the
Hoversonic, where Lacie quickly took a
seat behind the controls. “Here we go!”
she said.

 When the kids landed on an empty
beach near their destination, they didn’t
waste any time. They flew over the
forest toward the place where Logan’s
emergency signal had gone off.

As they got close to the spot where the
signal had come from, they could see
Logan waving to them from the ground.

 “Hi, guys! I sure am glad to see you!”
Logan said. “I was out for a walk with
my dog, Trixie, when she took off after
a squirrel. She kept running farther into
the forest. I chased after her, but she
disappeared into the trees. Now I’m
lost, Trixie is missing, and I’m supposed
to be home for dinner at six o’clock.”
“You’re not lost anymore,” said Mandy,
“but it’s not going to be easy to get you
home in time for dinner. We’ve only got
one hour left to find Trixie.”
Carlos spoke up. “Listen, we’ve found
enemy spies, hidden treasure, and
stolen jewels. We can certainly find a
missing dog!” he said.

 The four agents spread out and
called Trixie’s name. After 20 minutes,
they still hadn’t found her.
“I think we need another plan,” said
Lacie. “Logan, what does Trixie like to
eat? Maybe we can lure her back
here with food. Dogs can smell food
from really far away.”
Logan reached into his backpack
and pulled out a small bag of crackers.
“She begs for these whenever I eat
them,” he said, giving each spy a
handful.

 The friends walked slowly, dropping
crackers along the way. They kept
looking behind them, but Logan’s dog was
nowhere in sight.
“I hope Trixie’s okay,” Logan said,
starting to worry. “I can’t believe we
haven’t spotted her yet.”

“The Step Spotters!” Mandy cried out.
“They might be able to help us find Trixie!”
“What are Step Spotters?” Logan asked.
“They’re Carlos’s new invention,” Mandy
said. “They can spot human footprints
Carlos, can the Step Spotters track a
dog’s paw prints, too?”
“Let’s find out!” said Carlos. He put on
his goggles.

 “Wow! I can see all kinds of animal paw
prints,” Carlos declared. “Now, which ones
are dog paw prints? Wait...I see them!”
Logan, Mandy, and Lacie followed Carlos
as he continued through the forest.
Suddenly, Carlos stopped. “The paw
prints end here,” he said.

“But where’s Trixie?” asked Logan.

The kids looked around. Then Logan
heard a snore. He ran toward the sound
and found Trixie fast asleep on a cozy
bed of leaves.
“Trixie!” Logan shouted. “You’re okay!”
The little dog opened her eyes and
wagged her tail.

 “I’m glad we found her. But don’t
you have to be home for dinner in 15
minutes?” Mandy asked Logan.
“Yes!” said Logan, “but I’ll never make
it in time.”
“Sure you will,” replied Lacie. “If you
hold onto Carlos and me, our fly boots
will have enough power to carry you,
too. Mandy can carry Trixie.”
“That’s a good plan,” said Logan. “Let’s
go!”
The four friends flew to Logan’s house
at top speed.

 The kids were “Bye, Logan!” said Lacie.

The Spy Force agents laughed
nervously at the joke. “Thank you for
the invitation,” said Mandy, “but we have
to be heading home now. It was nice to
meet you.”
