Standard 3: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in reading and writing music.

I am a teacher who understands reading and notational skills required for my

students. Since the beginning of my undergrad, I had to take classes for these very
subjects. Before my undergrad, I took private piano lessons for 11 years. My
instructor would always implement sight reading as well as composition
techniques into every lesson. Learning those skills before college made me a
better musician by being able to sight read audition music and have an
understanding for analyzing music.
As a teacher, I will implement reading and writing skills in every rehearsal.
Starting rehearsals, I will develop student’s musicality by having them warm up by
sight reading. It is crucial for students to start learning how to sight read music
every day. Doing this will make students better players by making them self-
sufficient in the practice room. Writing skills are also very impactful for students.
If students are able to write their music, they are able to analyze music. Analyzing
music gives the student an advantage to listen outside of their own sound and
focus on the other moving notes being played around the ensemble.
