Standard 4: The Teacher of PK-12 music has skills in listening to, analyzing, describing, and

performing music.

I am a teacher who understands the visual and aural analysis required for my
students. Since the beginning of my undergrad, I had to take classes for these very
subjects. Before my undergrad, I took private piano lessons for 11 years. My
instructor would always implement aural skills as well as listening techniques into
every lesson. Learning those skills before college made me a better musician by
being able to perform and have an understanding for analyzing music.
I would use these skills in my classroom by having students listen for other parts
and explaining who carries a certain phrase in a piece. Doing this will help
improve their performing skills along with their listening skills because if they can
hear what is happening, they can adjust their sound throughout the piece. If they
can listen to the piece, they will also be able to describe what is happening in the
piece. Being able to describe what is happening tells me the students knows what
is happening and that they are ready to learn more and dig deeper into the
analysis of the piece
