Illuminations- Congruence Theorems Evaluation

Brief Description of Tech Tool: This tool allows students create triangles from side lengths provided. Through
exploration and manipulation, students determine if two triangles are congruent.

Technical & Cost considerations: This tool is requires a membership to be able to use.

Evaluation
Description of Learning Activity
This tool can be used to assist students in understanding triangle congruence theorems through exploration as part of
introduction to the concept.

1. Learning Activity Types

 LA-Practice - practicing for fluency-

 LA-Present - (read or attend to) presentation of new content/ideas- This tool helps present the concepts of
triangle congruence theorems.
o LA-Present-Demo - demonstration
o LA-Present-Explain - explanation
 LA-Explore - exploring/investigating mathematical ideas- This tool requires students determine patterns
through exploration of the relationship between side length and triangle congruency
 LA-Apply - applying mathematics to problems and situations- Students can use prior knowledge of
triangles to help determine if two triangles are congruent.

2. What mathematics is being learned?

Standards
Common Core:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.CO.B.6
Use geometric descriptions of rigid motions to transform figures and to predict the effect of a given rigid motion on
a given figure; given two figures, use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to decide if they are
congruent.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.CO.B.7
Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to show that two triangles are congruent if and only if
corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs of angles are congruent.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.CO.B.8
Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of congruence in
terms of rigid motions.

Proficiency Strands

 conceptual understanding- Students must consider congruency through visual manipulation to determine
triangle congruence theorems.
 procedural fluency
 strategic competence
 adaptive reasoning- Student determine patterns based on their manipulations of triangles reflection, and
reasoning.
 productive disposition

Additional comments on what is being learned.

3. How is the mathematics represented?

The tech tool uses numerical and visual representation. The tool provides allows students to manipulate and create
triangles.

4. What role does technology play?

The advantages are that the tool is a great way visually explore to the relationship between side lengths and triangle
congruency through exploration and creation.

Affordances of Technology for Supporting Learning.

 Computing & Automating –

 Representing Ideas & Thinking - Students visually create triangles to represent their thinking.
 Accessing Information -
 Communicating & Collaborating -
 Capturing & Creating -
5. How does the technology fit or interact with the social context of learning?

This tool is designed for individual use, however, I think this tool would work best in groups or pairs of students to
determine patterns.
