Arguments of Definition 2

Abstract/Topic Proposal

Millennials have long been carrying an extremely negative connotation where people
automatically assume, that, just because they were born with the internet they are lazy and feel
entitled. Millennials currently make up the largest age group in American History and even
though many deem them as being the saviors of the nation, many others consider them the
downfall of the country. In this project I am going to define and research what it really means to
be a millennial. Dictionary definition and what people actually use it as are very different as in
recent times people have been using the word as an insult instead of simply to describe a
generation of people.

Stein, J. (2013, May 20). Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation. Retrieved Feb. & march,
2018, from http://time.com/247/millennials-the-me-me-me-generation/

Summary: The article is an argument used to inform the reader about the statistics that prove
that millennials are “lazy, self-entitled, selfish and shallow”. The author claims that what people
older than millennials call them is true and not simply false statements. The author claims that
millennials are narcissistic people saying that 58% of teens scored higher on the narcissism scale
in a study in 2009 than those in a study in 1987.

Evaluation: The source will be very effective when demonstrating a counter argument in my
essay. The claims given in the paper will be used to establish an effective counter argument to
what I am trying to prove. The source is effective because the source uses various other sources
in order to effectively carry the argument that everything that is said about the “millennials” is
true.

Reflection: I learned that people do have reasons to call millennials what they call them as there
is actual research that proves certain statements to be true. Although many statements may be
true to certain people it does not necessarily mean that they apply to everyone.

Carmichael, S. G. (2016, August 22). Millennials Are Actually Workaholics, According to

Research. Retrieved March 11, 2018, from https://hbr.org/2016/08/millennials-are-actually-
workaholics-according-to-research

Summary: This article is used to inform the reader about millennials in the workforce.
Millennials currently make up the largest percent of people in the workforce and calling them
lazy really makes no sense according to new information. According to a new survey done
millennials are more likely to be considered work martyrs than any other generation. The survey
showed that 43% of work martyrs were millennials which compares to just 29% of the other
responders who were considered work martyrs. The article continues to disprove the stigma
about millennials being lazy.

Evaluation: This source will be very effective in my essay when using it to disprove statements
said about millennials. The statements said in the article will be used as great supporting
evidence for any claims that I make in my paper.

Reflection: Through this article/source I was able to learn about how millennials actually act in
the workforce. I learned that millennials are actually very hardworking and don't feel self-

entitled. I learned that they are more likely to not want to take paid time off compared to other
generations.

Graf, N. (2017, May 16). Today's young workers are more likely than ever to have a bachelor's
degree. Retrieved March 11, 2018, from http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-
tank/2017/05/16/todays-young-workers-are-more-likely-than-ever-to-have-a-bachelors-degree/

Summary: This article was used to inform the reader about new statistics on millennials.
Millennials currently are the most educated generation to date. More and more millennials are
entering the workforce with bachelor’s degrees. A new study showed that 4 in 10 millennials
entering the workforce came in with bachelor’s degrees which compare to only 32% percent of
the previous generation. New research also shows that millennials are more diverse racially in
the workforce than other generations.

Evaluation: This source is very effective because it gives supporting evidence for any claims
that it makes. I will use this source when trying to disprove the statement that millennials are
now well education and “uncultured.”

Reflection: Through this source I was able to learn about how millennials are taking over the
workforce. I also learned that millennials are more educated than other generations. I also
learned that gender and racial equality is more prevalent in the millennial generation.

Norton, R. (2017, January 19). The 14 Most Destructive Millennial Myths Debunked by Data.
Retrieved March 11, 2018, from https://medium.com/the-mission/the-14-most-destructive-
millennial-myths-debunked-by-data-aa00838eecd6

Summary: The article is an argument used to inform the reader about “myths” that are said
about the millennial generation. The author states various statements that are said about
millennials and then goes and disproves them. Most of what is said about millennials is about
how they act in the workforce saying that they are lazy and that is completely not true. A study
showed that 59% of millennials are more active in their workplace compared to only 50% of
previous generations.

Evaluation: This source is extremely effective because it gives a variety of “myths” and then
goes on to disprove them. I will be able to use this source as supporting evidence for any claims
that I make.

Reflection: Through this article I was able to learn the most of everything that is said about
millennials in the workforce is completely not true. This is because studies and surveys show that

millennials are actually very satisfied with their work. I also learned that most statements said
about millennials are said by older generations who just seem to not remember what it was like
to be younger.
