Exit Ticket Week 6

When I become an elementary teacher, I will put “Ratio” into practice. As a former high

school teacher, I gave a lot of lectures and not enough practice, limiting my students on the

opportunities to exercise their critical thinking skills. I completely defeated the purpose of a

college preparatory high school teacher. I am grateful that I am not currently teaching full-time,

only because I would have remained that ineffective teacher. The time away from the classroom

allows me to reflect and develop new schema so that I, instead, be a champion teacher when I do

return to the profession I am most passionate about. Part of that new schema is gradually

releasing cognitive work to my students.

I can envision working with a small group of students during independent tasks, using the

“Ratio” technique. I like the idea of “Unbundle”, breaking one question into multiple and

sequential questions so that each student is involved and held accountable for their learning. I do

not like the idea of leaving any student out, which is why I am eager to use other methods like

“Whys and Hows” and “Half-statement.” Elementary students love to learn and scrimmage to be

picked, so I must be diligent in preparing the work for all of them. With learned methods for

“Ratio”, it will help me to achieve that goal.
