Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Suzanna Liner_____________ Date: 04/28/2018___

Grade and Topic: Grade 2, Science Length of Lesson:40 Minutes for 2 Days
Mentor Teacher: Dr. Townes School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● This lesson on plant growth and dependency on the environment to fulfill its needs is part of a unit
covering interdependence between animals, plants, and their environment.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given a handout on plant growth, the student will be able to create a comic illustrating and describing
basic plant dependence on its environment by showing three of four key elements of a plant’s growth: a
seed, a transportation method, a source of sunlight/heat, and a source of water.
● Given a comic illustrating plant growth, the student will be able to label and describe what is taking
place to allow the plant to sprout and then grow successfully by labeling three of four key elements of a
plant’s growth: a seed, a transportation method, a source of sunlight/heat, and a source of water.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● Tennessee State Science Standard GLE 0207.2.3 for Grade 2: Identify basic ways that plants and
animals depend on each other.
 This lesson will also address Check For Understanding 0207.2.3: Construct a flow chart that
demonstrates how plants, animals, and the environment interact to provide basic life requirements.
 ISTE Standard 3: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of
purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

MATERIALS:
● “How will YOUR Plant Grow?” handout
● Computer lab or classroom set of laptops or tablets (if not enough computers, students can work in
teams)
● Interactive whiteboard
● Internet Access to:
○ Science Kids “How Plants Grow” Interactive Whiteboard Activity:

○ BrainPop “Plant Growth” Video:

○ ToonDo Comic Building Website:

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION:
The students will use the websites and video listed above to develop a comic demonstrating their knowledge of
plant growth based upon their understanding of basic interdependence within an ecosystem. To do this, students
will first watch the video introducing them to the plant lifecycle, listed above, followed by engaging in a plant
growth interactive whiteboard activity. After completing these, the student will utilize the cartoon building
webpage to use clipart found on the site to create a comic strip illustrating plant growth. A sample of the final
student product is available later in this document.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● For this lesson, the student will need background knowledge on the difference between plants and
animals, as well as sources of water and sunlight or heat.
● Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
● This lesson is a continuation of TN State Science Standard 2 for Grade 2.
● We will refer to this handout as we continue to explore interdependence as it relates to plant growth.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives as well as
for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this specific lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: (10 Minutes)
● To begin this lesson, we will spend 10 minutes discussing different plants we see on our way to
and from school every day.
● After identifying some of the plants we see during our commute each day, I will direct the
discussion by asking students to think about how the plant got there, where the seeds came from, where
the plant gets its energy, and if there is any water nearby.
● This will allow the student to think about the topics of the lesson proactively and engage them in
our lesson.
● Procedures:
Day 1: (30 Minutes)
Teacher:
1. Play BrainPop video on Plant Growth and transition into quiz (5 Minutes).
2. Take post-video quiz on BrainPop Plant Growth to check student engagement (10 Minutes).
3. Have student pass handout to fellow classmates while whiteboard activity is loading (1 Minute).
4. Read through handout as a class (3 Minutes).
5. Play whiteboard How Plants Grow game, each student gets one turn (11 Minutes).
Student:
1. Engage in introduction discussion.
2. Watch BrainPop video attentively, taking notes on key terms.
3. Participate in BrainPop review quiz.
4. Read through handout and ask questions if clarification is needed.
5. Participate in whiteboard game. Watch fellow students take turns, and learn from their mistakes
based on what the plant needs.
Day 2: (35 Minutes)
Teacher:
1. Review handout from previous class (3 Minutes).
2. Pull ToonDo website onto screen and introduce students to webpage (10 Minutes).
3. Direct students to ToonDo website on their own computers and help them set up their comic strip
(2 Minutes). If lacking computers, pair or group students.
4. Instruct students on how to develop their own comic by searching for and selecting clipart that
meets their requirements (2 Minutes).
5. Allow students to work on their comic for the remainder of class, monitoring student progress
and answering questions along the way. (18 Minutes).
Student:
1. Ask any questions regarding handout.
2. Follow along as I work through the ToonDo website, asking questions along the way if needed.
3. Develop a 3-slide comic strip on ToonDo website using clipart. Identify a seed, a method of
transportation for the seed, a source of sunlight or heat, and a source of water.
4. Ask questions if needed.
5. Describe what is taking place in each slide of the comic, emphasizing the four main elements.
6. Once completed, save comic to computer and print. Wait for further instruction.
● Closure: (5 Minutes)
● After each student/team has finished and printed their comic, have them trade with another
student/team and discuss the similarities and differences.
● Good discussion questions include: What was their source of water? How did the seed sprout
where it did? Was it a cold environment, or was it a hot one?

The four discussed key elements of plant growth and success are: a seed, a transportation method, a source of
sunlight or heat, and a source of water.

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this specific lesson.

STUDENT SAMPLE:

This student would have scored a score of 4 out of 4 on the rubric for illustration, but only a 2 out of 4 for
description because the student failed to mention the method of transportation and the seed specifically.
However, because the two scores averaged together to be a 3 out of 4, the student would have successfully met
the requirements for this lesson. After grading their assignment, I would meet with the student to discuss what
they can do on the next assignment to achieve a higher score.
