Subject/Code: BTP1613 Introduction to Pharmaceutical Science Date:7/3/18

Section: 1A
Module title: Uniformity of weight of tablets and capsules Groups Member:
1. Goh Yi Ling (TD17024)
Learning Outcome: 2.Cham Pa A/P Ai Wong (TD17010)
3. Nurul Syamira Muhd Anuar (TD17017)
4. Mahmud Zuhdi Bin Mohamad Poze
(TD17020)
Objectives:
1. To determine the uniformity of weight of tablets and capsules.
2. To ensure the consistency of dosage unit.

Apparatus/Material:
-Micro balance
-Weighing boat
-Tablets dosage form
-Capsule dosage form

Procedure:
1. 20 capsules are selected at random.
2. One capsule was weighed. The capsule was opened and the contents are removed as completely as possible. The
emptied shells are weighed. The net weight of its contents are determined, that is by subtracting the weight of shells
from the weight of the intact capsule.
3. The procedure are repeated with another 19 capsules.
4. For tablets dosage, 20 tablets are weighed.
5. The average weight was determined from the sum of individual’s net weight.
6. The percentage of deviation from the average net weight for each capsules are determined.
7. The deviation of individual weight from the average weight should not exceed the limits given below.
Average weight of tablet (mg) Percentage Difference Number of tablet
<130 10 Maximum 2
130-324 7.5 Maximum 2

Discussion:
Based on the result, the capsules used have an average weight of 102.6 mg which is under the category of ‘less
than 130 mg’.

Average weight of tablet (mg) Percentage Difference Number of tablet

<130 10 Maximum 2
All the 20 tablets that have been carried out did not exceed the limit of ± 10.0% and therefore, they are considered
to pass the test.

For tablets, since our average weight is 594.1 mg, the deviation of individual net weight should not exceed the
limits given below:
Average weight of tablet (mg) Percentage Difference Number of tablet
>324 5 Maximum 2
From the results, all our capsules are having a deviation of ± 5%, which means that all capsules have uniform
weights. , so all the capsules pass the test .This may indicate the uniformity of the capsules production.

Technical Report

Test of uniformity of weight (mass) is carried out to tablets and capsules to ensure accurate and consistent dosage
form to be administered by patients. This is necessary to ensure that patients take a precise pharmaceutical dose.
