This excerpt was from a discussion assignment based on Lexile Measurements. We were to
select three texts, then choose one using the worksheets provided to us.
From these three texts, I have chosen to share the Lexile Level for Guts: Our Digestive
System by Seymour Simon, a popular book for teaching health content, specifically, the
Digestive System. The Lexile Measure for this informational text is 980L. According to the
Informational Complexity Analysis Worksheet, this measure correlates with a grade span of 6-8,
and being familiar with the text, I qualitatively measure this as moderately complex.
Before this assignment, I had never heard of Lexile Measurements. I had always wondered what
the appropriate way was to select texts for students. I always went off other teachers’
recommendations. One question I do have for Lexiles and Text Complexity is, “Does this only
measure books, or may it also measure articles from magazines, journals, etc.?”
The use of the Lexile Measurements in schools is a great way to prepare selection of reading
materials that is appropriate for the grade level we teach. With teacher collaboration, this may be
used to prepare for summer reading programs or in preparation for the new school
year. Incorporating these measures as part of our lesson planning, it will also help us select texts
