1. Standards for lesson

Content

a. 7.5b The Constitution established three branches of government as well as a system of checks
and balances that guides the relationship between the branches.

Content Practices:

1. Define and frame questions about the United States that can be answered by gathering, interpreting,
and using evidence.

b. 6 C.Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a


variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.

3. Lesson Objectives

b. Students will examine section seven of the Constitution, which outlines how a bill
becomes a law.

Students will recognize how this process is an example of checks and balances between the Executive
and Legislative branches.

b. Students will create a T chart in Microsoft Word to better synthesize section seven of
the Constitution.

Students will navigate a game/simulation that follows the process of how a bill becomes a law.

3. Introduce the Learning Activity

a. Lesson objectives will be on the projector as students walk into classroom and discussed by the
teacher in the first few minutes of class.

b. The second activity, which is a computer game/simulation, will act as a motivator.

3. Provide Information
b. Students will walk in and log into computers.

c. When the bell rings, teacher will read lesson objectives out loud.

d. Teacher will help students open a T chart in Microsoft Word.

i.Open Word.

ii.Click insert.

iii.Click table.

iv.Select 2 column x 4 row option.

v.Type “Original” in first row first column and “Own Words” in first row Second column.

e. Teacher will ask students to open two websites from the resource tab on personal website.

ii.Click resources.

iii.Open both websites under “Lesson Plan.”

f. Teacher will briefly show where the “Show/hide Transcript” button is on the Docsteach website
(Simply scroll down past scan of Constitution).

g. Student will have the rest of the period to complete both activities, teacher will be available to
help and answer questions. Teacher will also signify when class is half over, which is about the time
when students should be starting the game/simulation. Tell students to print the certificate after
game/simulation is over.

h. Teacher will stop students 1-2 minutes before class ends.

i. WRAP UP: Students will to go back to the Word document and type a sentence or two
explaining how this process is an example of checks and balances.

j. Teacher will ask students to print and hand in both game/simulation certificate and Word
document.

1. Provide Knowledge of Results

. Teacher will be available during both activities by answering questions and giving feedback
along the way.

b. The Word Document and game/simulation certificate will be collected and graded by
the teacher.

3. Provide Practice

b. The game/simulation will act as practice to reinforce the main ideas of section seven.
b. The game/simulation will allow students to work with a different web medium while still
reinforcing the main ideas of section seven.

3. Methods of Assessment

b. Students will print and submit their T charts/wrap up sentences and game/simulation
certificate to the teacher for review their understanding of section seven of the
Constitution.

b. Game/simulation certificate, along with T Chart stated above, will assess students ability
to navigate Microsoft Word and and web resource.

3. Review

b. Student work will be reviewed by teacher to see if main ideas of section seven were
properly synthesized by students. Class will discuss how the lawmaking process is an
example of checks and balances as a warm up for following class.
