PinBall is a modified version of Ultimate Football. The same rules apply as a normal game of Ultimate Football
except the students will use a dodgeball instead of a football and score you have to knock over the other teams
bowling pin by hitting it with the ball.

Engagement:
Start off class by having the students do their warm-ups to help them burn off some energy to help them focus. After that
discuss the game of PinBall. Ask students if they have ever played the game or know of the game Ultimate Football. Talk
about the similarities between the two games. Review rules for PinBall by asking students questions. Example: How many
passes have to be completed before your team can score?

Exploration:
o First step is to have the students come and sit down in their assigned spots.
o Do the regular class warm-ups includes, 4 laps and 1 for fun (the students pick one exercise they feel they need to
work on and perform it for 30 seconds then choose a new exercise for the remaining 30 seconds).
o Sit down and explain the game
o Review how to catch and pass the ball pass.
A. Catching (using both hands, keeping eyes on the ball, looking the ball all the way into your hands)
1. Hands out for target
2. Fingers up and form a diamond (ball above the waist)
3. Fingers down (ball below waist)
B. Passing (using an overhand method)
1. Side faces target
2. Hold ball by ear
3. Step with non-throwing foot
4. Rotate hips
5. Snap wrist and follow through at the target
o Explain the game
1. Layout: Place 1 hula-hoop in the center of the free throw lane on both ends of the basketball court. Place 1
bowling pin inside each hula-hoop. The boundary lines for the game are the basketball court boundaries.
2. To score one must knock over the opposing teams pin by throwing the ball and hitting the pin with the ball.
A minimum of 4 completed catches by 4 different teammates on each team’s possession is required before
your team can score. A player cannot knock over a pin while holding onto the ball. No player can step
inside the hula-hoop.

3. A pin knockdown is worth 1 points. If a team knocks down their own pin while guarding, then a point is
awarded to the offense.
4. After a point is scored the ball is given to the other team at their free throw line.
5. A player must throw or toss the ball up the field to try to score. If a player catches the ball in the air they are
allowed to keep possession. A player can take 1 steps with the ball after a catch but only to keep their
balance. They cannot complete the catch stop and then take a step.
6. If the ball is dropped or knocked down, then possession of the ball goes to the opposite team where the ball
was dropped/swatted down at.
7. Defensive players must be at least arm’s length away from the offensive person who has the ball.
8. NO CONTACT! If contact is made, the team on offense gets the ball where the contact was made.
9. Not allowed to take the ball out of player’s hands.
10. The offense can run with the ball only when they have advanced the ball inside the 3-point line on the
opposing team's side of the court.
11. All team members on the defense can guard their pin against being knocked down. No defenders can stand
inside the hula-hoop.
o Check for understanding
A. how to score points
B. what happens when a pass is not caught, and the ball hits the ground
o Split class into two teams (squads 1, 3, 5 on one team squads 2, 4, 6 on the other)
o Get the game started (play until 2 minutes left in class
o After the game is over have them walk over to the black line next to the gym doors and line up.
