INTRODUCTION/MOTIVATION:

1. Prior to the lesson, the teacher will set out the cookie sheet and magnetic numbers on
one of the back tables to prepare for the small-group. The teacher will also have the
YouTube video pulled up on the computer for easy access.

3. The teacher will tell the students that they will be practicing counting by 10’s.

4. The teacher will then have the students stand up and count along as they watch a video.

5. After the video is over, the teacher will have the students sit back down and will tell
them that Ms. Jones is going to talk to them about counting by 10’s and to listen closely
to her.

6. The teacher will hand the class over to Ms. Jones and observe as she facilitates her part
of the co-teaching whole-group lesson.

7. The students will then be transitioned into small-groups.

INSTRUCTION:

8. The teacher will begin her small-group by reviewing multiples of 10 (up to 100) by using
flash cards.
9. The teacher will have the students call out each number aloud with her.
10. The teacher will then ask the students if they enjoyed Chicka Chicka 1,2,3.
11. The teacher will allow for the students to respond before explaining the activity.
12. The teacher will explain that they are going to get to add their own numbers to the tree,
but that they have to go in order by 10’s.
13. The teacher will make the activity sound challenging to spark the students interest and
will say “Do you think you can do it?”
14. The teacher will then tell the students that since we are counting by 10’s, they have to
start with the number “10.”.
15. The teacher will call on a student to find the magnetic numbers displayed on the table
that shows the number 10, and will have the student put the magnetic numbers on the
tree/pan.
16. The teacher will guide the students through the activity and redirect them as necessary.
17. The students will repeat the process until they’ve put each multiple of 10 (through 100)
on the cookie sheet.
18. The teacher will observe the students throughout the activity and identify any areas of
struggle.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS FOR DIVERSE LEARNERS:

There are no identified Special Education students in this Pre-K classroom; however, the
teacher will differentiate instruction for students struggling with the concept.

 Struggling students: The struggling students will be given additional exposure to the
concept of counting by 10’s throughout the school day. For example, the teacher will

prompt the students to count toys during free time; such as links, or blocks to expose
them to the concept in meaningful contexts.

Assessment:

 The teacher will observe the students during whole-group instruction.

 The teacher will analyze the students’ ability to place the correct number on the cookie
sheet when prompted during the small-group activity.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

 The mobile device app “Skip Counting” is a great resource for practicing skip counting. It
is an interactive game that keeps the students engaged, while also prompting them to
skip count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. This app can be a challenge, and would be great for both
strugglers or advanced students.
