Abstract

The purpose of my research is to show the negative effects globalization has on terrorism

throughout the world. I feel like ever since 9/11 terrorism has increased tremendously and groups

are using our advancements in the world to do there work. Most of what i’m talking about is how

our technology is getting smarter and how it can negatively affect a population in a blink of an

eye. This paper isn’t trying to make you think globalization is the problem because there are

some sick minded people out there with these ideas. It’s more about how globalization affects

terrorism and hopefully we can see what the problem is with our advancements. The reason I

chose this topic is because terrorism is an act of terror among people, and recently we had that at

our school. On purpose or not many students were affected because of a recent shooting in a

school in Florida. This problem may never go away but research helps us find out how to slow it

down.

The Effects of Globalization Towards Terrorism 3

Terrorism is a hot topic all around the world, mainly because it has been increasing.

Globalization makes it easier for terrorist attacks to happen around the world. Technology is

more advanced than ever, making it harder to tell the difference between a bomb and a phone.

Also making it easier to recruit and post terrible things all over the internet. Our advancements

isn’t entirely to blame, but globalization has negatively affected terrorism causing it to increase

around the planet.

The Effects of Globalization Towards Terrorism 4

The figure on page three shows steps and how easy it is for these terrorist groups to get

worldwide exposure. Just from recording it on a camera and uploading it to a social media of

their choice. As said earlier terrorism has increased, “Within a single year the world has

experienced a 61% increase in terrorist attacks, according to the 2014 edition of The Global

Terrorism Index from the Institute for Economics & Peace.”(Amanda Macias, 2014, para. 1).The

evolution of technology has made terrorism extremely easy in today's world. First of all, it's

easier to recruit people to join a terrorist group with technology advancements and the use of

social media. Posts all over the world are hard to keep ahold of especially with special codes

terrorist groups use. There are so many communication apps that are under the radar. Technology

is so advanced that you couldn’t tell if there was a bomb in a phone or if it is a just a regular

phone. Technology also can give out information to terrorists so they can plan their next attack

without getting caught and dismantled.

Many people might say that globalization has no correlation with terrorism; however one

idea to argue are the phones still. Taking it back to 1990’s and before that you couldn’t take

video off your phone or even upload it by just hitting a button. Some other people may say

“we’ve always had bombs and guns”. Now the world has weapons that are getting smaller,

stronger, and harder to detect in a security line making it more lethal than ever. The internet

when it first came out barely gave you information when you google searched it, now in today's

world you could type in “how to make a bomb” and many results would pop up. That

information can be given to anybody and if a threat see’s that many lives could be lost, again.
The Effects of Globalization Towards Terrorism 5

There are many arguments made to say globalization hasn’t influenced terrorism at all but much

data a research tell a different story.

The economy has been severely impacted by terrorism. For example, with globalization

people want faster ways of travel like the use of airlines. “After 9/11, the initial shock caused a

30% decrease in demand for air travel” (Ariel, Adam, Lily, 2016, slide 4). This effect cause

thousands of jobs and lost trust in today's world. Several airlines such as US airways declared

bankruptcy with the decrease of flying. Many airlines had to lay people off work since 9/11,

American Airlines let over 7000 people go (Ariel, Adam, Lily, 2016, Slide 4). Airlines have tried

to tighten up security to make sure a terrorist attack like 9/11 never occurs again. A poll shows

that 69% of Americans feel like there could be a terrorist attack in the next few months (Ariel,

Adam, and Lily, 2016, Slide 5). “World systems theory suggests that modernized states are

responsible for underdevelopment and the failures of states on the periphery of the global

system” (Brenda and James Lutz, 2015, para. 7). These stats are only from America but in

developing countries there are terrorist attacks daily. “In the worst case they would do it

violently; people on the fringes of the labor and environmental movements would engage in

trade-sabotaging terrorism” (Robert Wright, 2002, para. 24). Dirty, poor countries that can

hardly support their country have bomb attacks, mass shootings, kidnaps, etc. It’s a sad world

and with globalization terrorism has increased more than ever.

Terrorism is an act to terrorize others and and school shootings would fall under

this category. With it being easier to bully others, make others unhappy school shootings have

been higher than ever. We’re only 11 weeks into 2018, and there have already been 17 school

shootings where someone was hurt or killed (Saeed Ahmed, 2018, para. 1). There have been

many more school shooting threats making in unsafe or feel unsafe for students attending their

schools. If students are afraid to go to school how will they go to college get a job in the

future. If there school has already been attacked how do we force them to go back in a

traumatized situation. Moving on to other parts of the world religious groups are attacking their

own kind. There are Jewish extremist groups in Israel that have reacted to globalisation not only

by targeting Palestinian Arabs but by attacking Jewish citizens that they see as too secular.

(Brenda and James Lutz, 2015, para. 7)

Although Globalization helps our world in many ways we need figure out a way

globalization will slow down terrorist attacks and threats. Monitoring social media, phone calls,

etc may take away or freedom; however, A person’s life is way more important than them

listening to what your plans are. Helping out developing countries into markets to make money

instead of staying in poverty is another to keep frustrated people from making a decision. Lastly

security should tighten up even more especially when people are exporting and importing to any

country. Even though the world is a dangerous place, we need to figure out how to make it safer

for the public.
