IES Exam Selection Procedure

UPSC Indian Engineering Services Examination is conducted in order to recruit potential candidates for various posts in Engineering Services under the public
sector. These posts are further grouped under four categories, which are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics &
Telecommunication Engineering. In order to appear for UPSC Engineering Services Examination, which is also referred to as UPSC IES Exam, the candidates
are required to fulfill certain eligibility criteria. Those, who meet the eligibility criteria, can apply online (except for students belonging to remote areas), through
the official website and can choose any of the test centers, located across the country, allotted by the commission.

The final selection of the candidates is done on the basis of their performance in the written examination, followed by a personality test. The written exam,
followed by personality test, scrutinizes candidate’s aptitude for the post. The test comprises of five papers, out of which the first paper is of General Ability
Test, while the other papers are chosen from Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication
Engineering. Paper-II & III are objective in nature, while paper-III & paper- IV consist of conventional questions. The personality test further assesses
candidate’s abilities, skills and capabilities for the posts for which he/she has competed. Each paper of the written exam is of 200 marks that make the total of
1000 marks. The personality test is also of 200 marks. The candidates, who successfully clear both the stages, are finally selected.
