At
UREC
On
April
2,
2018,
students
from
the
MUED
272
and
273
classes
went
toe
UREC
to
teach
the
members
of
the
JMU
community
the
ukulele.
The
goal
of
this
experience
was
for
those
learners
to
leave
understanding
simple
chords
and
having
parKcipated
in
a
music-‐making
experience.
Learning
Environment
For
this
experience
we
took
it
to
JMU's
recreaKon
center.
By
hosKng
it
in
the
lobby
of
UREC
we
were
able
to
aQract
a
diverse
audience.
In
order
to
create
a
safe
space
in
such
a
public
seSng,
the
instructors
had
to
be
confident
in
oneself
and
their
knowledge.
We
chose
songs
that
would
be
interesKng
and
familiar
to
the
college
students
so
that
way
they
had
a
good
Kme
and
could
sing
along.
We
made
sure
that
the
instructors
were
always
around
the
learners
in
order
for
them
to
feel
safe
and
comfortable
making
mistakes.

InstrucKonal
Delivery
With
the
instrucKonal
delivery
we
were
addressing
our
peers,
which
can
be
challenging.
One
way
that
we
did
this
was
by
teaching
them
in
small
groups
for
the
first
30
minutes.
In
these
groups
we
taught
them
the
basic
chords
G,
C,
Am
and
F,
as
well
as
how
to
read
chord
tabs
in
case
different
chords
showed
up
in
the
jam
session.
We
also
gave
them
a
handout
with
informaKon
on
the
ukulele
and
chord
tabs,
that
way
they
could
refer
to
the
handout
if
they
had
quesKons
and
none
of
the
teachers
were
available
to
answer
their
quesKons.

InstrucKonal
Planning
For
this
assignment
the
students
involved
in
this
experience
had
to
create
a
lesson
plan.
Our
plan
involved
a
detailed
process,
list
of
materials,
and
learning
goals
with
I
Can
Statements.
W
Our
plan
involved
30
minutes
of
instrucKon
and
an
hour
and
a
half
of
jamming.
We
used
google
drive
to
plan
the
events
in
order
for
all
teachers
to
have
access
to
them.
We
also
created
a
powerpoint
of
songs
for
the
jam
session,
color
coordinaKng
the
chords
in
order
to
help
show
when
the
chords
should
be
played.
