1. In the event of a FIRE

(With the detection connected to the FPX106 panel) The Fire Detection system will
automatically activate the visual and audible alarm on the FPX106 panel and also the
external alarm sounder/beacon if installed.

Stop your engines/machinery as quickly and safely as possible and close all vents/fans to
the area, if any.

Carry out Fire procedures, as set out for the vehicle. If required, activate the FirePro
Xtinguish generators to suppress the fire.

To activate the FirePro Xtinguish generators, remove the tamper evident tag marked
“EXTINGUISHER OPERATE SWITCH” from the front of the FPX106 panel, then press and
hold the operate switch for 3 seconds.

Evacuate and escort all persons to a safe area away from the fire. Ensure that all persons
are accounted for.

Observe for any re-ignition and do not open any doors or hatches until a minimum of 10
minutes after activation of the fire suppression system. Remember only open doors and
hatches slightly and with extreme caution. Ensure you are protected from any fire and
gases that may still be present and have a portable fire extinguisher at the ready for use if
required.

Replace and reset the FirePro Xtinguish system at the earliest opportunity.

2. General

The system you have been supplied with is a FirePro Xtinguish fire suppression aerosol
system (Aerosol generator/s).

This is a MANUALLY OPERATED fire suppression system, which uses a linear heat cable
detector fitted within the protected area. These linear heat cable detectors are used to
detect heat produced by fire and also set temperatures classed as extreme for the
protected area. The FirePro Xtinguish generators are only activated manually with human
intervention via the electrical activation switch on the FPX106 panel.

The FPX106 panel can operate multiples of FirePro Xtinguish generators: 12VDC
maximum of 2 generators or 24VDC maximum of 4 generators. These are activated
through wiring to a multiple activation connection block (See multiple fire extinguishing
wiring diagram for further info).

The FirePro Xtinguish generator and detectors should be mounted within the
engine/machinery compartment.

Upon activation, the heat generated via the electrical activator within the generator,
connected to the activation section in the panel, will rapidly transform the solid compound
within the cylinder to generate the fire suppression aerosol agent.

The fire suppression aerosol agent tackles the fire by inhibiting the chain chemical reaction
present within combustion.
The aerosol agent will not damage any of your engine equipment and is nontoxic and
does not give off any toxic by-products when mixed with fire or extreme heat.

FirePro Xtinguish aerosol generators have been proven efficient in tackling fire classes A,
B, C, and F including electrical fires. The system supplied has been calculated on class B
and class A (surface) fires.

FirePro Xtinguish recommends 1.00 – 1.5mm approved fire/heat resistant cable for all wiring
requirements, depending on cable runs.

3. Volume of area to protect

It is very important to have an accurate measurement of the overall volume of your engine/
machinery space requiring protection. The fire suppressor/s supplied are designed to work on a total
flooding operation. To calculate the volume the following calculation should be used in conjunction
with any relevant corrective factors:

Measure the overall Length (L)


Measure the overall Width (W)
Measure the overall Depth (D)
Calculate: LENGTH x WIDTH x DEPTH = L x W x D.

Measurements should be taken at the longest, widest and deepest points. This will give
the overall maximum volume of the engine/machinery space.

Corrective factors: -

Do not reduce any of the overall volume for equipment like engines, generators, etc. This
type of equipment may be able to draw in the aerosol agent and this could dilute the
concentration required per m3. Keeping the concentration levels the same as for an area
clear of machinery will help the distribution of the particles around the machinery within the
area. Larger sealed equipment may be deducted from the overall volume, such as fuel
tanks. This will depend on the positioning of them.

Calculate the overall percentage of openings (vents, gaps, exhausts/extraction equipment, etc.). If
the calculated percentage is over 10%, a corrective factor may be required.

1. Panel

a. Selection of position
The Panel shall be installed at a location clearly visible to the operator.
Suggested locations are either the Bus Dashboard’s area or the controls’
area located adjacently to the driver. The panel must be readily accessible
to the driver and in a position where visual contact shall be possible at all
times.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The FPX106 panel has been quality checked prior to
dispatch/installation by the manufacturer. In the highly unlikely event of a
false discharge of any extinguisher connected to the FPX106 panel, proof
that the tamper evident tag has NOT been removed from the panel fascia is
required. If this cannot be provided, then no claim can be made. Ensure that
the FPX106 panel has been supplied with the “tamper” evident tag fixed in
position to the face of the panel. If it has been supplied without the tamper
tag fitted, please contact your supplier before proceeding with the
installation.

b. Installation Method & Openings

Find a suitable position for mounting the panel, taking in to consideration the
clearance required for the wiring at the back of the panel. Also considering
the wiring run to the panel and ensuring at the same time that the panel will
not be in a position where it may get knocked or accidentally damaged, but
easily accessible if required.

The FPX106 panel is for use as a single zone detection system.

An opening of 46-48mm diameter shall be drilled to house the controls and


terminals of the panel (bottom part). Fixing screws must be tight but over
tightening shall be avoided.

c. Power Supply
The panel must be fed from two power supplies; one main shall be provided
from the vehicle’s main switch, using a linear 10 Amp fuse, shown below
(see relevant wiring diagram on page 19) to provide power under normal
operating conditions e.g. system enabled (system functional – green light
on). The second main must be fed from a power supply that is permanently
ON e.g. from a connection that is continuously fed from the battery.

d. External Sounder/Alarm (optional)

The panel provides the capability to connect to an external Alarm Sounder of


stronger intensity.

2. Cabling (to Control Box)

a. Cable Specification (minimum requirements)

The cable shall be 4-core 1mm2 fire rated shielded.

b. Cable Routing

Fire rated cables must run alongside the rest of the vehicle’s cables feeding other
systems in the engine bay area. Selected routings must provide basic protection
characteristics for the cable.

c. Terminations

Cables must be properly tightened to the appropriate terminals as indicated on the


wiring diagrams supplied.

d. Fixing

Use fixing accessories and supports included in the kit. Additional fixings may be
used provided that they ensure adequate support but no damage to the bus-kit
components.

3. Control Box

a. Selection of Location

The control box is an IP65. However, it must be installed in an area outside the
protected area / engine bay whereby any potential threat due to excessive heat is
avoided.

b. Fixing

The control box must be fastened securely with lock-tight screws on the vehicle’s
body.
Note: fastening of the control box must be such to obstruct the same from loosening
due to vehicle vibrations.

c. Inlets / Glands

All glands must be properly fastened to the control box and cables shall be
sufficiently tightened to ensure proper water sealing.

d. Sealing

Fire rated silicon glue must be used to ensure water proofing at the glands-cable
entrance location.

e. Labeling

All cables and linear heat detection devise must be clearly labeled so tampering of
the systems components by non-trained personnel is avoided.

4. Generators

a. Location Selection

The generators shall be installed as far away from the engine as possible e.g. 30-50
cm apart and more, if possible. The Generators must be installed in such a location
without being obstructed by cables, hoses, other equipment etc.

b. Direction of Discharging Aerosol

i. If two generators are used then:


 ONE generator shall be installed on one side of the engine and the
other ONE on the opposite side - Side is considered the broad side of
the engine – both generators must be discharging on the engine.
 One generator shall be positioned with its discharging outlet directed
at/near the engine base e.g. 2/3 down from top of the engine.
 The other generator must be directed on the fuel lines connecting
/feeding the engine.

ii. If three Generators are used then


 ONE generator shall be installed on one side of the engine and the
other TWO on the opposite side - Side is considered the broad side
of the engine – all generators must be discharging on the
engine.
 One generator shall be positioned with its discharging outlet directed
at/near the engine base e.g. 2/3 down from top of the engine.

 The other TWO generators must be directed on the fuel lines
connecting/feeding the engine.

c. Fixing

Proper supports must be used to ensure adequate fastening at all times. Periodic
inspection of the generators shall be carried out monthly during engine preventive
maintenance time.

d. Generator Connection Housing Sealing

All inlets of cables to the generator connection housing shall be properly tightened
and sealed with fire rated silicon glue.
Some silicon glue must be applied on the connector housing thread itself for
ensuring waterproofing.

e. Nozzle Installation

Nozzles are fixed on the units prior to shipping; however, after installation is carried
out, the installer must ensure that the subject components are securely fastened
onto the units. Otherwise, the same must be tightened by the installer with lock-tight
nuts.

Prior to installing your FirePro Xtinguish fire Suppression system


the following procedures should be carried out: -
1 . Ensure that engines/machinery is switched off and that there are no hot
pieces of equipment near to where the FirePro Xtinguish generator/s is/are
to be fitted.
2 . Ensure that you can easily access the protected area to carry out the
installation.
3 . Check the overall volume is correct (see section 3).
4 . Check that all equipment required are in good working order and not
damaged or any parts missing.
5 . Ensure that the areas where the installation will be carried out are free of
dirt, grease and other similar substances.
6 . Check that you have all the necessary tools and equipment required for the
installation including personal protective equipment: Protective clothing, eye
protection, steel toe cap shoes.

Order of Installation of the FirePro Xtinguish generators and brackets:

i. Assess the area and find a suitable position for the FirePro Xtinguish
generator/s, ensuring that you are able to get a good solid fixing for the
bracket/s. It is important to ensure that the position of the FirePro
Xtinguish generator gives a free and unimpeded area (clearance) for the
aerosol gas to exit the generator and allow an efficient egress around
the protected area and machinery within it. As a guideline give
approximately 500mm - 1000mm clearance (line of sight from exit ports, see
Safe Working Distances in section 5) from any machinery or equipment.

ii. Hold and mark where the bracket is to be mounted. Fix the bracket in its
position using screws or bolts. It is very important that a good solid fixing is
achieved to take the weight of the generator/s.
iii. Install the FirePro Xtinguish generator into the bracket centrally along the
length of the generator body. Tighten the bracket around the FirePro
Xtinguish generator, ensuring
a good tight grip around the body of the generator is achieved. Then tighten
the brackets directional bolts to ensure the generator exit ports are facing
into a free unimpeded area.

There is no requirement for the electrical connections on the FirePro Xtinguish


generator at this stage, instead insert a wire link to simulate the extinguisher/s:

5. Cabling of Generators

a. Routing
Cables must run safely to the generators and running the cables near
excessive heat sources must be avoided.

b. Protection of Cabling
When cables must run near hazardous areas additional/proper
sleeve/coating shall be used.

c. Fixing
Cables shall be properly fixed along routings of other engine cables and
excessive vibration shall be avoided.

d. Terminations
Terminations must be properly done by properly tightened the wires on the
connectors. Over tightening shall be avoided.

e. Waterproofing/Sealing of Terminations (Glands)


All inlets of cables to the generator connection housing shall be properly
tightened and sealed with fire rated silicon glue.
Some silicon glue must be applied on the connector housing thread itself for
ensuring waterproofing.

6. Linear Heat Sensing Cable

a. Connection
The Linear Heat Sensing Cable shall be connected on the proper terminals
inside the Control Box.

b. Fixing
Use proper insulation material provided and P-clips as depicted in the photo
below. The Linear Heat Sensing Cable must not come in direct contact with
any heat source. Cable ties provided may also be used where needed.

c. Termination Housing
Ensure that the Linear Heat Sensing Cable has been terminated using the
termination housing shown below. A 22KΩ End-of-the-Line Resistor EOR
shall be fitted at the end of the LHS cable to provide monitoring of the
system.

Installation of the FPX106 panel and detectors (technical).

Order of installation.

Follow this sequence strictly:


1. Install the FirePro Xtinguish generators as set out in section 7.
2. Install the linear heat cable detector within the protected area, on the deck head/roof of
the engine/machinery space. Ensure the “end of line” resistor is installed at the end of the
linear heat cable wiring run. This is used for monitoring the complete detector circuit.
3. Choose your mounting area for the FPX106 panel and the external sounder beacon if one
is being used.
4. Run cables to the linear heat cable connection, FirePro Xtinguish generator/s and
external sounder beacon. DO NOT CONNECT THE FirePro Xtinguish GENERATORS
AT THIS POINT. Use a wire link as shown in section 7.

COMMISSIONING PROCESS (also part of annual maintenance procedures)

Carry out the following system commissioning procedures.


(ensure wire link is installed instead of extinguisher/s before carrying out commissioning
process. This may be easier with two people - one at the extinguisher and one at the
panel).

3b At linear heat cable – disconnect the At panel – the alarm should be
end of line resistor and connect the two activated. When the end of line
parts of the linear heat cable resistor is replaced the alarm
should stop.

The Final connection to be made is to connect the FX1 & FX2 wires to the FirePro
Xtinguish extinguisher.
Follow these steps when carrying out this procedure:
1. Switch off breaker and ensure there is no power to the panel or to the FirePro
Xtinguish generators.
2. Remove all personnel from the area of engine compartment where the FirePro Xtinguish
extinguisher/s are installed.
3. Remove the “LOOP” wire and connect the two wires from the FirePro Xtinguish generator
to the two wires from the panel FX1 & FX2 in any order, ensuring that you are not in the
way of the exit nozzle of the extinguisher.
4. Move away from the engine compartment and close all doors/hatches.
5. Switch on the breaker. The power light should be “On” and the system is now powered up
(LIVE) and ready for use if required.

9. Maintenance

As all FirePro Xtinguish fire extinguishing aerosol generators are non-pressurized, they do
not require a pressure gauge. They do not require weighing like pressurized fire
extinguishers.

Monthly Inspection: Visually check the system and extinguishing units.

Annual Inspection:
I. Check the bolts and fixings on the bracketing are tight and secure.
II. Check the FirePro Xtinguish generator/s are secure in their brackets and that they
have not been damaged or suffering from any wear.
III. Carry out commissioning procedures to check complete FPX106 detection system,
as when first installed.
IV. Fill out the service record.

With all portable fire extinguishers and fixed fire extinguishing systems. It is recommended that they are visually checked on
a monthly basis and physically checked on a twice-annual basis. A competent person or qualified engineer should carry out
the twice-annual maintenance. Contact your supplier for more information.
