Memorial Day – A Day to Honor and

Remember Sacrifices Made
We Honor All That Took the Oath
Memorial Day: Honoring the Sacrifices Made and
Remembering
By Cliff Sosamon
What does Memorial Day mean to you? Is it a day off work, time spent grilling with family and friends? A
day to grab the hottest discounts on cars and electronics — perhaps a needed new mattress? Or
maybe a day to catch a game and enjoy a cold one or two?
It seems over the years Memorial Day has come to represent the luxuries of Western society and the
best sales since Presidents' Day. Retailers are more than willing to give the American public just what
they want — sales.
However, for those of us who have served, and the families of those who did not come home, it is
anything but a retail holiday. Memorial Day to us is a somber day of remembrance. It is a day to honor
the ultimate sacrifice so many of our brothers and sisters in arms have made for this exceptional nation.
To remember this country was founded — and kept secure — by the blood of patriots. Men and women
who’ve heeded the call to stand the ramparts and defend all that we hold dear: life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness.
The day was first observed after the Civil War and known as Decoration Day. Businesses closed and
communities came together in a day of honor and remembrance. They decorated the graves of fallen
soldiers with flags and flowers. They set time aside, one and all, to honor those who fought for freedom.
In 1971, this long-standing tradition was recognized as a federal holiday meant as a time for our nation
to come together as one and recognize the cost of freedom.
To many, Memorial Day has come to signify the start of summer and a well-deserved three-day
. weekend. For the families who have lost a loved one, and those who've lost a comrade in arms to the
ravages of war, it is a day of honor and reaffirming the promise to not let their sacrifice have been in
vain.
It is a day in which we laugh at their antics, stand tall with honor for having them in our lives, and cry —
for they are no longer with us. We are proud to carry on their memory and do so at one of the
thousands of Memorial Day events around this great land, or at one of the thousands of cemeteries at
which they now lay at rest.

Sure, we will enjoy a family cookout and a cold one, but we should also set time aside to honor our
fallen. Memorial Day to us is a somber day, a happy and prideful day. These great warriors filled our
lives and sacrificed everything to ensure we sleep peacefully at night under the protective blanket of
freedom they helped provide.
So, on May 28th, take your loved ones to a Memorial Day event, or place the Stars and Stripes on the
gravesite of an American military service member, or set time aside to reflect on the sacrifices that have
been made to ensure we remain the land of the free.

Honoring and Remembering Them All

Our military comes in all sizes, shapes, ages, and genders. However they all share one
important thing. They are all deserving of our thanks, respect and gratitude for saying yes to
service of this country.
Regardless of the branch of service, length of service, MOS or location of service, they served and put
themselves in the position that if asked to place themselves in harm’s way for us and our freedom, they
said “Yes”, and many gave all they had to give…..their lives.
World War I (1917-1918)
World War II (1941 –1945)
Korean War (1950-1953)
Vietnam War (1964-1975)
Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990- 1991)
Global War on Terror (Oct 2001)
Since the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, about 2.5 million members of the
Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and related Reserve and National Guard units have been
deployed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Many of these have also paid the highest price for freedom.
Let is also never forget about all those with both visible and invisible scars that came about as a result
of their service to fight for and defend our freedoms and the freedoms of other who are unable to fight
for themselves.
We will not forget, we will honor and remember them all.

The Team of Cherokee Veterans Community along with other ministries and organization teams come
together to reach and help our veterans. Building ramps, fixing stairs, doing electronic and plumbing
issues are just a few of the things our veterans need.
Cherokee Veterans Community has a motto. “We are Standing Strong Shoulder to Shoulder and
we are Stronger Standing Together than when we are standing alone.” These are not just words
to us, it is our Mission and Purpose. Join us as we reach out to our veterans and their families and
help us to change lives. You don’t need to be a veteran to be on a team. You only need a heart to
serve those who serve us so bravely.

Reaching Out Into the Community

Part of the mission of Cherokee Veterans Community is to reach out and into the community of
veterans and their families living in Cherokee County. Some of ways we accomplish this is to join with
other veteran organizations, churches or ministries.

IMPORTMANT INFORMATION: You DO NOT need to be a veteran to serve on a “CVC-OP’s

TEAM”. Cherokee Veterans Community’s Outreach & Projects Teams are for both veterans and non-
veterans.
The only prerequisite to become a team member is to have a caring and compassionate heart to
serve our Veterans. Contact us at: veteransministry@FBCW.net
CVC stands with and joins other ministries, organizations and churches that care about our veterans
by providing outreach and service projects for our veterans and their families.
On March 27th CVC joined Chattahoochee Technical College’s Veteran Benefit and Resource Expo
and join with other veteran service organizations, ministries and groups that offer service to benefit all
veterans.
On April 7th we joined with the Cherokee Country Homeless Program in their fundraise project the
“Ghost Warrior” concert held at the Northside Cherokee Amphitheater by placing 100 American Flags
around the area. This added to thyme of serving our veterans.
Every Thursday Evening Male and Female Veteran Support Group meet (Veterans Only) at FBCW
and start at 6:30 pm in Building “A” rooms 260 and 261. Please visit

Growing Deeper
Sinking our roots in the soil of His Word

Going Deeper in our faith (Father, Son & Spirit) is something that has been sought by Christians since
Christ walked the earth. It is natural for Christians to desire, and to experience the closeness of an
intimate relationship with God. But true intimacy with God is not simply a feeling on a par with a romantic
relationship. It goes much deeper than emotions, it goes down to our very soul and is reflected by our
actions. True intimacy with God begins with drawing closer to Him.

Out of Darkness
Life can seem hopeless . . . until we remember that God is our Rock, our Redeemer, our Reason. When
we make God's character the center of our focus and not our circumstances, we can find hope in the
midst of our darkness.

desire to measure who deserves what, read
