Formatting an MLA Bibliography or Works Cited Page

• Your bibliography should appear in alphabetical order

• All resources should be listed alphabetically; don’t separate them by type
• The second line of any entry should be indented 5 spaces
• Titles are to be in italics.
• Punctuation matters—so watch for it!

Basic Model for books:

Author Surname, First name. Title. City of Publication: Publisher, Copyright Date. Medium.

Example of format for books:

Books
Roleff, Tamara L. The Atom Bomb. New York: Greenhaven Press, 2007. Print.

Basic Model for a magazine or newspaper article:

Author Surname, First name (if available). “Article Title”. Newspaper or Magazine Title.
Publication Date: Page(s). Medium.

Example of format for an online article from a database*:

Kevles, Daniel J. “Oil Sands Options”. Toronto Star. Jan 4, 2010. Ebsco Canadian Reference
Magazine Centre. Web. April 29, 2013.
And
newspaper *Ifthe article is online, also include the name of the database and the date of access and leave the
page numbers out.

Basic Model for Internet Sites:

Author Surname, First name (if available). “Title of page”. Title of Website. Name of sponsor or
publisher. Date of copyright or last update. Medium. Date of access.

Examples of format for web sites*:

A website with no author:

Websites “Nuclear Fusion”. Hall of Science and Exploration. American Academy of Science and Technology.
2013. Web. April 4, 2013.
* The first date in a website entry is the date the site was created or last updated. The second date is the date
you visited the site. URLs are no longer required.
