Name of Article: The Effects of a Buddy Bench on Elementary Students’ Solitary Behavior During Recess
Author: Andrew A. Griffin Jr., Paul Caldarella, Christian V. Sabey, Melissa A. Heath
Journal Name: International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education
Date of Article: September 2017
Summary: This is an article about the impacts that “Buddy Benches” have on students. Buddy Benches
was an idea put into action by a second grader in Pennsylvania. These benches are located on school
playgrounds and are a safe place for kids who feel lonely to go and make friends. Buddy Benches have
been implemented in schools across the country but until this study, no one knew the impact they have
on the children. The results show that the benches influenced the number of students who showed
solitary behavior. In the study, after the benches had been on the playground for some time, they
removed them. Once the benches had been removed, the amount of solitary behavior increased. They
then put the benches back on the playground and found that the amount of solitary behavior went back
down.

Part B

a. Title of Article: Model Leadership: Discovering Successful Principals' Skills, Strategies, And
Approaches For Student Success
b. Author: Asiedu-Kumi, Agnes Oteng
c. Year: 2013
d. Summary: This article is about principals of urban schools who go above and beyond to give
their students and teachers what they need to be successful. The classroom is not the only place
that has an impact on students’ success. The school needs to be a positive place and the people
responsible for that are the principals. Having leadership within schools has a direct impact on
student success. Principals can positively model leadership while also promoting it within their
schools. Principals also have the power to encourage and support the teachers that work within
their schools. Teachers who feel supported are going to take their jobs more seriously which will
positively impact the students. Several principals were asked a series of questions about their
beliefs and philosophies and are in the article, so they can be shared. The hope is that future
educators and principals will read this article and gain ideas and philosophies to use to further
better schools around the country.
