CALIBRATION STEPS
SETTING UP F90

STEP 1: Plug in and turn on computer

STEP 2: Plug in 4400 box and connect USB cable to computer
STEP 3: Open EctAcqr 93T
STEP 4: Turn on 4400 box
STEP 5: Using probe size calculator, find the correct probe size (85% FF) and range for you calibration
standard.
STEP 6: Using the F4 key, set up your plots for the Acquisition. (6 Plots), Default Voltage Settings
F1Diff-Strip, F1 Diff-XY, F2 Diff-XY, F3 Diff -XY, F4 Diff -XY, Mix-Strip
STEP 7: Set up your F90 (Angle separation between your ID ring and OD ring), use the probe size calculator to
find starting frequency.
a. Enter this frequency for F1. F2=2*(F1), F3=4*(F1), F4=1/2* (F1).
Ex. F1 = 14.2, F2 = 28.4, F3 = 56.8 and F4 = 7.1 (LOW RANGE)
b. F2 thru F4 must be even multiples of F1
c. In some cases, so to not exceed the range of the probe you must adjust your F2 thru F4 frequencies.
Ex. F1 = 148.4, F2 = 296.8, F3 = 74.2 and F4 = 37.1 (MID RANGE)
STEP 8: After entering frequencies, also enter driver levels. As a rule of thumb the higher the frequency the
higher the driver level.
Ex. F1 = 14.2Khz, F2 = 28.4Khz, F3 = 56.8Khz, and F4 = 7.1Khz
Driver Levels F1 = 325, F2 = 350, F3 = 375 and F4 = 300
Ex. F1 = 148.4Khz, F2 = 296.8Khz, F3 = 74.2Khz and F4 = 37.1Khz
Driver Levels F1 = 400, F2 = 425, F3 = 375 and F4 = 350
STEP 9: Balance probe in good portion of calibration tube. (Ctrl-Z) After changing Freq, Driver or Gain
STEP 10: Record as you pull probe past the ID and OD rings. File will default to the temp folder. Name your
file in this folder as 9999-001-001.
STEP 11: Hit F10 to view the recorded waveform. At this time set up the plots for the EctViewr93T. (F1 Diff-
Strip, F1 Diff-XY, F2 Diff-XY, F3 Diff-XY, F4 Diff-XY & Mix XY) Default Voltage Settings Move the cursor
to both the ID and OD ring indications in the waveform (F1 Diff-Strip). Read the phase angles in the top right
hand corner of the F1 Diff-XY. Make sure that the filter is turned off in the Option’s Tab.
STEP 12: Hit F10 to return to EctAcqr93T. Rotate the ID ring to an angle of zero degrees. (Ctrl-R)
STEP 13: REPEAT STEPS 10 – 12 until ID rings read an angle close to zero degrees
STEP 14: In the EctView93T move cursor to OD ring, read the phase angle in the top right hand corner. If
phase angle is greater than 90, F1 frequency needs to be reduced. If phase angle is less than 90, F1 frequency
needs to be increased.
STEP 15: Hit F10 to return to EctAcqr93T. Adjust your frequencies according to STEP 14.
STEP 16: REPEAT STEPS 8-15 until ID Ring is at zero degrees and OD ring is at 90 degrees.

SETTING UP F1-F4 ABSOLUTES

STEP 17: In the EctAcqr93T, insert probe into cal. standard to pull probe past the graduals. Have probe pass
from largest gradual to smallest gradual. This will give a better signal for working with the Absolutes. Tip of
signal in F1-F4 ABS (XY) should reach bottom right hand corner on a 10 volt span.
STEP 18: Adjust all ABS so that tip of signal point toward bottom right hand corner. This is all done in the
rotation window (Ctrl-R), pulling probe back and forth thru the graduals.
STEP 19: Adjust the gain (Ctrl-G) for each ABS. In some cases you may also need to adjust the Driver Level at
this time (Ctrl-D), so tip of signal reaches the bottom right hand corner of XY plot. Watch out for saturation
with Driver Level and Gain adjustments. (Note: some higher Freq’s may not actually obtain a full response)
STEP 20: Balance probe in good portion of tube. (Ctrl-Z)
STEP 21: REPEAT STEPS 17-20, until tip of signal reaches bottom right hand corner.

STEP 22: Hold calibration standard with hole up and away from you. Record as you pull probe past hole.
STEP 23: Hit F10 to view waveform for hole. Now look at voltage spans (lower left hand corner in XY Plot)
You want your F1 Diff to be in the range of .600 - .750 volts
STEP 24: Hit F10 to go back to EctAcqr93T to adjust the gain (Ctrl-G) for F1 Diff. At this time adjust F2, F3 &
F4 to match F1 voltage span.
STEP 25: After changing gain, balance (Ctrl-Z) probe in good portion of tube.
STEP 26: Repeat Steps 22-25, until you have matched the voltage spans and are in the range of .600 - .750
STEP 27: Hold calibration standard with hole up and away from you. Record as you pull probe past hole.
STEP 28: Look at the phase angle for F1, F2, F3 & F4 Diffs. You want to match F2, F3 & F4 to the same angle
as F1.
Ex: F1 @ 31.00, F2 @ 27.00, F3 @ 36.00 & F4 @ 31.00
STEP 29: Hit F10 to go back to EctAcqr93T to rotate the phase angles (Ctrl-R) for F2, F3 & F4.
Ex: F2 would rotate down by 4, F3 would rotate up by 5 and F4 would not need to be rotated.
STEP 30: Repeat Steps 27-29 until angles match.

Creating Calibration Curve

STEP 1: Open ECTView or ECTAuto

STEP 2: Open waveform from the calibration tube. (File => Open or Ctrl-O)
STEP 3: Under Options Menu, ensure that the filter is turned off. (The filter is on when the check
mark next to it is present)
STEP 4 (OPTIONAL): Determine if a Display Mix is necessary. If so, place cursor over a baffle
signal from the unit. Select Mixing => Mix Cancellation => Analysis Mix. Just like with the other mix, you
want a higher frequency in input channel 1 and a lower frequency in as input channel 2. Press Auto Balance.
The new mix will need to be rotated to match the hole size and angle for the F1 Diff. With the cursor over the
through hole signal from the calibration tube waveform, this select Rotation under Mixing menu. In this
window, you can adjust the angle and size of the through hole signal for the Display Mix.
STEP 5: Change Plot Layout, by pressing F4. You will need to have F1 Diff (Strip), F1 Diff (XY), F2
Diff (XY), F3 Diff (XY), F4 Diff (XY), Acq Mix (XY), Disp Mix (XY) [if created]
STEP 6: From the toolbar, select Calibration setup. On the Flaw Information Tab, enter in the actual
wall loss depths for the flaws on the tube. (ID 10%, ID 100%, OD 80%, OD 60%, OD 20%). Click OK
STEP 7: Place cursor over ID Ring signal. Open Calibration Setup window. Enter in the phase angle
for each frequency. This is done by clicking on each individual frequency component tab (F1 Diff, F2 Diff, etc).
The phase angle is the number listed in the upper right corner of the XY plot. Click Generate.
STEP 8: Repeat this process for all of the frequencies and the mix. Click OK.
STEP 9: Repeat STEP 7 for all flaws listed above.
STEP 9: After the values are entered for all flaws on all channels, click the Generate tab on each
channel again. This ensures that the curve is generated correctly.
STEP 10: Save Calibration Curve, by selecting Calibration => Save. Ensure that this is saved with
the same name as the calibration tube waveform, and located in the same folder as the calibration waveform and
the unit data.
STEP 11: Open the first tube in the unit, and begin analyzing.
