INTRODUCTION

The term dialect involves the spelling, sounds, grammar and pronunciation used by a
particular group of people and it distinguishes them from other people around them. Dialect is a
very powerful and common way of characterization, which elaborates the geographic and social
background of any character. Dialect is a variety of language that is used by one group of
persons and has features of vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation distinguishing it from other
varieties of the same language that are used by other groups. Dialect has thus been defined as “a
distinct linguistic form peculiar to a region or social group but which, nevertheless, can be
understood by speakers of other forms of the same language”.
The two main types of dialects are the geographic dialect, spoken by the people of the
same area or locality, and the social dialect, used by people of the same social class, educational
level or occupational group. In general, the greatest language diversity occurs in heterogeneous
societies where the extent of most people’s communication is restricted to a local area. Often
these people are bilingual or multilingual because knowledge of neighboring languages is
essential for trade and other socio-economic and cultural interactions.

English profiency 4 is very important to me and my group. Make us improve our English
language. My team or my group mate is Asyraf, Nik aziz, zulkiflie and Alif. In week 6 we
receive a topic “CULTURE” for student life. we start the discussion to make an interview, video
and doing an presentation in week 11. We discuss type of culture that we can elaborate more in
Upsi student life and lastly we make a final decision is dialect. Because in upsi, there are many
type of student such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Sarawak, Sabah, Kedah and Johor. That what
make us easy to interview and get information to finish the task given. I think this task is suitable
for me to communicate with another dialect that I don’t know. I also can learn more when
interview another student and sharing an information.
Presentation is about the corner, in week 9 we start to create a question to interview
student upsi. For the final touch we get 3 question about dialect. For the first question is ‘ can i
ask you, are you still use your mother tongue in your student life?’ secondly is ‘why you still use
your dialect even you know maybe somebody can’t understand your dialect’ and for the last
question is ‘can you give one example dialect from your state that people who do not know. We
can start our interview as soon as possible. For the first student that we interview we give an
present to him/her.

Start our interviewing a student from Sabah, dian and bibi was interviewed by Asyraf in
block 5. Asyraf start ask the question and record the interviews. second student from
Terengganu and Kelantan. for the last student is from Perak was interviewed by Alif. All
interview scene was record one by one and combine in one CD. only in one day we succeed
interview all dialect and get prove in recording.

Post-production, we start to conclude all the task. we combine our video recording. our
video duration about 7 minutes. after finished combine a video recording, we start to making a
slide for presentation in week 11. This assignment make us more comfortable to communicate
with other dialect that have in upsi. for the conclusion, they don’t want communicate with
another language because they feel easy to communicate in mother tongue.
