“The window is not an inert opening, it is an object, creating an active

space for interaction. Two perpendicular planes and the transitional surfac-
es in between. It is directing the gaze, reflecting rhythmically, and allowing
more outside to seep in.”

The Playa Grande Spa sits adjacent to the Main House, The geometry of the Spa is broadly sugges-
tive of formations like naturally eroded rock or strange ruins. A closer reading reveals a carefully
controlled unification of the 6 discrete volumes via inverting readings of symmetry, continuity, align-
ment, tangency

“In the most diagrammatic sense, the Retreat House is simply the expression of a court-
yard parti. The evolved form is a drifting ring that shifts in plan and section just below
the jungle’s canopy. The roof is a ruled surface requiring over 200 scissor trusses.

There are multiple focal points to both MALI and the larger Parque de la Exposicion. The intention
of our design is to bring localized clarity and resonance to each focal point, reconciling the obvi-

“The strangeness of this aesthetic decision would only be implied through a intricate circulation
route passing over and through the roof structure, but would clearly be explicated from above,
from the aerial view. It is here that the landscape is revealed as completely artificial...” X-ray Plan

With its formally charged interiors, the new theater on the roof challenges the
notion of a minimalist black box for a performance space. A new plaster tech-
nique has been used to create an evocative space which performs well acousti-
cally by selectively absorbing and diffusing sound.

“The dualist mode of thinking in contemporary architectural profession for the building and ground
relationship fluctuates between either disguising the building with natural elements and creating a
fake sense of the natural, or undermining the ground by fetishizing the figure. Our proposal sits in
between, where the artificial and natural is in a symbiotic relationship.”

“Central Park’s poché lies between the closest capillary roads and the separating wall
around the borders of the park. We place, where the foliage dissolves into a concrete urban
landscape.History will be embedded in another type of landscape. The new MET has an un-

“Izka would reevaluate the concept of the public, in terms of sharing and common. The atrium
homes the public functions by coiling them around vertically from the auditorium on the base-
ment to the top floor. The ramp weaves the north and south parts of the building, creating a con-
tinuous working space... “ Longitudinal Section
