The day of souls
ALL SAINTS’ DAY and ALL SOULS’ DAY
All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (November 1 and 2) are the
days, when all Lithuanians go to cemeteries to put up candles
on the tombs of their loved ones, also on unvisited tombs,
and to say a prayer, in the belief that this will help to keep the
link between the living and the dead, as All Souls’ Day is a
special time, when souls come back home. These are quiet
and peaceful days and have nothing to do with Halloween, the
feast of hosts, celebrated in other parts of the world.

Trakai Castle

One of the popular scenic day trips from

Vilnius is impressive Trakai Castle, a 40
minute drive west. This is an historic area
which boasts over 200 lakes, and the
castle itself is on an island connected to
the town by a narrow causeway. Although
the castle is Trakai’s main attraction, the
town dates to the 13th century and has
had an interesting history with a number of
different nationalities living there including
Russians, Poles, Jews and Lithuanians.
2. Siauliai Hill of Travel 12 km north of Siauliai and you’ll find the Hill
Crosses of Crosses. Not just a few either, devotees have
been placing crosses on the hillside since the 14th
century so there are hundreds of thousands of
them. It is thought the tradition started as a
‘peaceful resistance’ to the Teutonic Knights that
invaded Siauliai at that time. Not only crosses,
rosaries, pictures and photos also make up the
saintly ensemble
Gediminas Tower

Another top sight to see in Vilnius is

Gediminas’ Tower. This was originally
part of the Upper Castle, one of three
castles Vilnius used to have.
Unfortunately these came under
attack in the 14th and 15th centuries
by the German military (aka the
Teutonic Order). Today, Gediminas’
Tower is a vital part of Lithuania’s
history and enjoys symbolic status on
the national currency. You can reach
the tower either by walking up the hill
or taking the funicular, there are great
views of the Old Town from the top.
