A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Who can tell me what we did yesterday? Looked at shadows of ourselves, Looked at
shadows of objects.
I am going to read a little more of What Makes a Shadow?
 I will read pages 24 – end.
Today we are going to be observing far and close shadows with our hand. Our learning
target today is: I can make my own shadow and compare short shadows to long
shadows.

2. Content Delivery (20 minutes)

We are going to form groups of two by drawing sticks. We are going to follow your Sun
and Shadow Journal. The first thing that we are going to do is pick different objects and
make as many different shadows as we can. Then draw when you saw, follow the
questions in your lab book. (I will let them explore with different objects for a while.)

Now what you will do is take one of the objects and make the longest shadow you can
and then write down how you did it. After you are done with that, create the shortest
shadow you can and write down what you did.

3. Closure (5 minutes)
Okay class, make sure that you filled out your journal about the shadows you made.
After you get done filling that out, discuss with your table one thing that you saw or
noticed. I am going to go around, and I want each group to share one thing that you
observed or noticed.

B. Assessments Used
Formative Assessment – students write down their observations and groups sharing
one thing they noticed.

C. Differentiated Instruction
Students can use their hand to create a shadow if they choose to not use any objects.
Students can work independently if they choose.
