Él acuñó el concepto de budismo comprometido en su libro Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire.[2] Tras un
largo período de exilio, recibió permiso para regresar a Vietnam en 2005.[3] Nhat Hạnh ha publicado
más de cien libros, incluyendo más de cuarenta títulos traducidos al español. Nhat Hanh es activo en
el movimiento pacifista, promoviendo soluciones no violentas a los conflictos.[4]

Biografía
Venido al mundo como Nguyễn Xuân Bảo, Nhat Hạnh nació en la
ciudad de Quảng Ngãi en Vietnam Central en 1926. Con 16 años
ingresó en el monasterio de Từ Hiếu cerca de Huế, Vietnam,
donde su primer maestro fue el maestro Thanh Quý, en dhyana
(meditación zen) Chân Thật.[5][6][7] Graduado en la Bao Quoc
Buddhist Academy en Vietnam Central, Thich Nhat Hanh recibió
formación en zen y en la escuela de budismo mahayana, siendo
ordenado monje en 1949.[2] En 1956, fue nombrado editor jefe
del Vietnamese Buddhism, el periódico de la Unified Vietnam

entonces como Dharmacharya y como jefe espiritual del templo Từ Hiếu y los monasterios asociados.

lámpara», convirtiéndole en un Dharmacharya o maestro del Dharma, de la mano del maestro Chân

En 2005, después de largas negociaciones, Nhat Hanh obtuvo permiso del gobierno vietnamita para
regresar en visita a Vietnam. También fue autorizado a enseñar allí, publicar cuatro de sus libros en

La propuesta de Thay
La propuesta de Nhat Hanh ha sido combinar una variedad de
enseñanzas provenientes del zen tradicional con otras
aportaciones de las tradiciones del budismo mahayana, métodos
del budismo theravada e ideas de la psicología occidental para
ofrecer una luz actual en la práctica de la meditación. La
presentación de Hanh del Prajñāpāramitā en términos de
«interser» tiene antecedentes doctrinales en la escuela Huayan
de pensamiento,[28] que, como se ha dicho muchas veces,
proporciona una base filosófica para el zen.[29] Nhat Hanh ha
sido también un líder en el movimiento del budismo
comprometido (término acuñado por él), promoviendo un rol
individual activo en crear el cambio. Él cita al rey vietnamita

Nombres de Thay
El nombre vietnamita de Thích ( 釋) viene de «Thích Ca» o «Thích Già» (釋迦), significando «del clan de
Shakya (Shakyamuni Buddha).»[5] Todos los monjes y monjas budistas dentro de la tradición del este
asiático de mahayana y zen adoptan este nombre como «nombre de familia» o apellido implicando que

El laureado nobel Martin Luther King, Jr. nominó a Nhat Hanh para el Premio Nobel de la Paz en
1967.[11] Nhat Hanh no lo ganó (como en 2012, el premio de la paz no ha sido fallado en diecinueve
ocasiones incluido ese año).[32] Recibió el premio «El Valor de la Conciencia» en 1991.[33] Ha sido
protagonista en numerosas películas, incluyendo The Power of Forgiveness exhibida en el Dawn
Breakers International Film Festival.[34]Nhat Hanh, junto con Alfred Hassler y la hermana Chan
Khong, ha sido protagonista de un cómic titulado «The Secret of the 5 Powers» en 2013.[35]
