Community Health & Wellness

For the third Culture and Character section, I needed one Service and Stewardship

artifact, and one Wellness artifact. For the first, I chose my expedition final product from my

Junior year. For the second, I chose a powerpoint presentation that I made in my twelfth grade

Wellness course.

My Junior year expedition was all about bias, gentrification, and the “Code”. I chose to

write a spoken word poem which I performed with my partner Larryn McGee. I framed the poem

as a letter to “society”. By personifying society, I was able to directly address the concerns and

issues that our expedition covered. I was able to put a lot of emotion into the words I chose

because I was able to make it more personal and direct than a poem. I was able to write it as a

poem formed letter. When I finished writing it, I color coded it so my partner and I knew which

parts to speak and when.

My Wellness class has always been a saving grace on A days. Starting the day with

science, I go into Wellness and have fun, then it’s two math classes in a row. Over the year we

covered a lot of topics (especially when it was too cold to go outside), but one of the units I

really enjoyed was our leadership unit. We learned what it is to be a leader and the different

characteristics that one needs or already has and doesn’t know. The artifact that I used for this

portfolio was a presentation that I put together on leadership and me. What it means to me, how I

feel that I am a leader, what makes me a leader, etc. Of course I had to throw a little personal

twist on it (it was a more personal and less formal assignment) to make it more like me. So

plenty of jokes and sarcasm to go along with the required information.
