1. AIMS AND OBJECTS

Main aims in this project is how to use and understand engineering materials, to know
the different parts and function in washing machine, and how to do work in group and
have understanding in group work.

2. INTRODUCTION
Washing machine is designed to help in washing clothes, sheets, towels etc. Washing
Machine uses water for cleaning. The main definition of washing machine to cleanse,
with detergent, soup, bleach with the help of water. Washing machine works as
immersing, rubbing, rinsing and scrubbing. In the past people used to wash clothes by
hands. Steam driven machinery was made in UK and USA.

In Chicago 1908 the first power washing machine was manufactured by Hurley Machine
Company. Washing machine looks like drums which was galvanized with tub and
electric motor.

Automatic washers back at a time it was referred as washer/extractor, It has both

feature washing and dying and the ability to fill and drain water by itself. But that
properties is only available in automatic washing machine, semi-automatic washing
machine one has to do manually.

There are three types of washing machine semi-automatic, top loader, front loader.
Semi-automatic washing machine are knobs which is used manually. Whereas top
loader and front loader are mostly full automatic, its steps done automatically.

3. LITERATURE REVIEW

3.1. Washing Machine

A machine which used to wash clothes, towels, sheets by detergents or also used to dry
cloths, towels, sheets. It’s invented to reduce physical effort.

3.2. Working Principle

Washing machine works with the help of motor which is connected at the bottom end of
the machine. It is connected to agitator by a unit called transmission which helps the
direction of the spin tub and the agitator. There are some small holes in tube. When
motor reverses transmission it lock up and agitator, spin tub and transmission rotates
work together as unit. In the same when cloths shifts in dryer, the dryer working on
phenomenon of centrifugal force, but dryer cannot dries water completely its only
remove the possible water. After washing cloths water left behind is drained by the pipe
connected to dryer.

3.3. Manufacturing of Washing Machine

3.3.1. Parts Manufacturing

First step is to make all the specific parts of washing machine. Sheet metal parts is used
is washing machine which is called press, and there are some other parts created with
plastic in washing machine which are made in injection mold process. In this process
plastic is melted to make a desire shape and then it’s cooled for the stabilization of
shape. In the same way different types of machine also used to manufacture the
transmission, motor and the water pump.

3.3.2. Sub Assembly

If parts manufacturing step is complete then it the time to put all the parts to form bigger
parts. Transmission is also fixed in machine which helps to control speed and direction
of agitator. First washing machine is manufacturing and then it is welding. Welding
places are polished so it does not snag the cloths.

3.3.3. Assembly
If all the main parts of washing machine is assembled tub is lifted to motor and then the
transmission is mounted with the tub and it’s connected to a base and in the side of the
tub the agitator is also placed. Pump is mounted it’s sealed so that does not leak.
Outside panels are connected to surroundings and then lid and controls are mounted.

4. DIFFERENT TYPES OF WACHINE MACHINE

4.1. Front loading Washing Machine

Front loading washing machine are most easy and useful to compare other types of
washing machine. It’s has low noise but the use of detergent is high efficiency. For
using this washing machine one has to stop down in order to load and unload.

4.2. Top Loading Washing Machine

Top loading machine takes more water, energy and its noise is high compare to front
loading machine, its space is less then front loading machine. But we put cloths from
the top so machine so it’s easier compare to front loading washing machine. Top
loading washing machine has no agitator and it is expensive.

6. ASSEMBLING OF WASHING MACHINE

First the motor is fixed with is opened at the bottom which was fixed with agitator of
washing machine.

 Then the main body of washing machine is fixed.

 Spin wheel was fixed inside the tub.
 The rear small cover was fixed with the help of screw.
 At the end the control panel was fixed and nob was connected to its original
position.

7. DESCRIPTION AND MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES

7.1. Main Body

The main body cover of washing machine is made up of steel. It is usually coated with
zinc to be resistant to corrosion. The steel is manufactured in a coil which allows metals
to cut at desired size. Tub is made up of stainless. All the other parts in washing
machine is made of steel know as enameling iron. In enameling iron there is also
included the porcelain, these sheet metal parts are formed with a machine which
presses sheets of metal between two halves of a mold.

7.2. Agitator

Figure 16 Agitator of Washing Machine Reference [http://homeguides.sfgate.com/]

Agitator is one of the main part in washing machine. In washing machine there are two
types of agitators. First is straight vane and the second one is dual action. Straight vane
agitator have side and bottom fins that rotates back and forth.
Agitator basically helps to produce strong rotating current which rinses clothes and
rotates cloths inside the tub. When detergents, soups or bleach are used it removes the
stain from clothes.
In agitator there is gearbox to drive. It is also locked by gearbox when motor spins in a
particular direction. Overloading of washing machine may jam agitator or might damage
the motor or gearbox.

8. METHODS OF FASTING AND SECURING

Fasting or securing of the washing machine is done mainly by the help of screw driver.
Hammer and pliers are also used because of some rusted screws. First of all the bottom
rear cover is removed by removing the screws using of four face screw driver, then
opened the spin wheel by screw driver the screw is in the middle of spin wheel, after
that main body and finally control panel.

9. DESCRIPTION OF MAIN MATERIALS USED IN WASHING

MACHINE

Different Parts of Washing Machine

9.1. Water Pump

A pump which circulate water in washing machine. Its works in both direction. It work is
to re-circulates water which is used during the wash cycle and drains the water during
the spin cycle.

9.2. Agitator
It is fixed in the tub of washing machine, and the most important part of washing
machine, throw this clothes move up and down along with water and detergents and
helps to rub the cloths with each other. There are some washing machine with a disc
instead of long agitator and this disc contains blades on its upper side. When blade
rotate strong currents in water and rubs the cloths which helps in removing stains.

9.3. Tub
There are two type of tub in washing machine. First one is inner tub and the second one
is outer tub. Clothes are washed and dried in inner tub. In inner tub washing machine
there are small holes for draining the water. External tub is used to cover the inner tub
and it supports during clothes washing machine.

9.4. Motor
Motor is connected with agitator and it also produces rotatory motions. Speed of the
motor can be varied depending on the load and types of the clothes loaded in it.

9.5. Timer
Its helps in setting to wash clothes manually. In automatic mode the time is set
automatically on load.

9.6. Drain pipe

Its help to remove dirty water from washing machine.

10. MEDIUM COMPLEXITY PART

Motor:

The motor is connected to the agitator or the rotating disc “top loading washing
machine” or in inner tub “front loading washing machine”. Seeing that these
components cannot drive themselves. In other words, the motor rotates the agitator or
rotating disc “to loading washing machine” or in inner tub “front loading washing
machine”. These electric motors can reach high speeds very quickly, to smoothen the
acceleration, washing machine are provide with drive belt.
