Fibratore Project

1. Objective
The objective of this report is evaluate an alternative structural laminate for the composite tank,
produced by Fibratore Colombia, to reduce the thickness, tank weight and increase the mechanical
properties.
The current laminate design adopted by Fibratore is composed by a combination of 4 layers of WoRo
and 4 layers of CSM and our proposal is to replace all of them by 4 layers of Combined Fabrics
LT0800/S250.

2. Mechanical Tests Equipment

The tensile strength tests were made at EMIC DL3000 Machine based on ISO 527-4 standard.
All the tests were made at Owens Corning Technology Center in Brazil.

3. Specimens
Panels with different products were made to produce the specimens in order to compare the
mechanical properties.
First panel were laminated according to the currently Fibratore’s solution, using 4 layers of Woven
Roving 800 g/m² and 4 layers of Chopped Strand Mat M710B 450 g/m².

6. Conclusion
The current Fibratore solution shows higher resin content with lower mechanical properties when
compared with Owens Corning proposal.
This resin saving can contribute to reduce the operation cost and even attend the mechanical properties
of the tank. Furthermore, the process will be faster, once the new solution reduces the number of layers to
half.

7. Recommendation
Owens Corning recommends replace the current Fibratore solution by OC proposal due to the faster
lamination, easier air entrapment removal and reduced consumption of resin.
Once the resin cost is higher than glass cost, customer has with Owens Corning proposal opportunity to
reduce raw material volume and cost, decrease production time due to lower layers to be laminated, tank
weight reduction keeping or increasing it mechanical properties.
