(FIRST GRADE)

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

3.PK.3 Listen and respond to stories from different cultures and eras.

2. Objectives:
SWBAT – understand what are some vegetables that a community garden can grow.
Create a “dream garden” (by drawing).

3. Materials/Equipment:

• The book “Our community garden”


• Some vegetable cards
• Paper
• Crayons

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
I will ask children one question before I start to read this book.
• “Do you have a community garden near your house?”
• “Have you ever worked in a garden?”
• “What did you do in the garden?”
We are going to read the book “Our community garden”, show the cover page to the students.

While reading the book, make stops and ask questions:


• Do you like to play hide-and -seek?
• What are those tools use for?
• Is that a good idea to write a garden diary? Why?
• Why are they dancing?
• Are they happy to have all the food together?

B. Extension activity:
For today’s activity we are going to create our own “dream garden”
• Pass the paper and crayons for students.
• Tell children that they need to draw a garden with some vegetables in it.
• It may also include someone work in the garden.
• Or some insects in the garden.

5. Closure:

For closure,

• The teacher will read the book again.

• We will have a little discussion about the insects (show on the book).

• Put children in small groups.

• Let them discuss about the insects (are they helpful or harmful).

• Each group will give one reason that insects are helpful/ harmful.

• The teacher will write the reasons on the paper. (add something important if

the student did not mention)

• Hang the paper in the classroom. (also the children’s work “Dream Garden”
