The 21st century

The company entered the 21st century with a flourish, being voted best mining
equipment supplier in a survey conducted by Professional Management Review (PMR)
magazine.

The publication canvassed the views of decision-makers across the opencast industry
who pronounced Komatsu Southern Africa the sector’s premier equipment supplier.
As a mark of this achievement, the business was presented with the prestigious
PMR Golden Arrow Award.

New premises were acquired to house the extended Reman Centre.

Komatsu Ltd confirmed Komatsu Southern Africa’s responsibility for the sale and
after-sales support of products in a number of neighbouring territories through a
dealer network. These included Angola, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique,
Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The dedication and hard work of the local team in building the brand and its support
structures had not gone unnoticed and in 2003 the company was honoured by its
receipt of the Komatsu Ltd Presidential Award for the previous year’s marketing efforts.

On the cutting edge

As the business continued to grow, so too did customer expectations in an increasingly
complex business world where time, without question, means money.

Management was alert to these needs and the first step was to replace the company’s
IT platform with a state-of-the-art system supplied by SAP in 2009. This provides the
intelligence to drive processes within Komatsu’s high-tech Parts Distribution Centre
(PDC). The 18,000m³ warehouse not only has an inventory of around 120,000 line
items valued at in excess of R1 billion but houses the shipping, inventory planning,
parts contracts and after-market departments. More than 120 employees and
contractors work in the centre and are motivated by the need to maximise the
availability of customers’ equipment.

The Komtrax Support Department was launched to monitor the condition and
operating characteristics of all current Komatsu off-highway equipment remotely.
Komtrax technology operates via satellite link to communicate data detailing each
aspect of a product’s performance. This functionality provides an accurate assessment
of operational efficiency, tracks problems like excessive downtime or idling and
produces workload records. It is now an integral part of every new product and can be
retrofitted to older machines.

New products to meet new challenges

Komatsu Southern Africa started to gain access to an increasing number of new models
from a widening variety of sources as Komatsu Ltd expanded its global manufacturing
base. One of these products was the PC200-6S, a tracked excavator produced by
Bangkok Komatsu Co. Ltd, in 2001.

In the same year but at the opposite end of the scale came the launch of Komatsu’s
gigantic PC8000-6E shovel. The massive machine was built to satisfy economies of
scale and boasted a standard bucket capacity of 42m³. The first local PC8000-6E shovel
purchased was to Ingwe Coal Corporation for use at its Douglas Colliery.

In 2004, the mighty WA1200-1 wheel loader boasting a standard bucket size of 20m³
was purchased by Sishen Iron Ore Mine. Known by Komatsu Ltd as the ‘mountain
mover’, the loader provided the final link in the operator’s train of mining equipment
extending from shovels and dozers to wheel loaders, excavators and dump trucks.

Later that same year saw the introduction of the HM300-1 and HM400-1 articulated
dump trucks (ADTs). These ADTs have left a lasting footprint on the Southern African
construction and mining landscape.

Other important introductions during this period included the Komatsu KMAX GET
