PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) EC-12

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge
to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their
developmental characteristics and needs.
 Summary: The teacher will be cognitive that all children develop at different rates and that this
development is affected by outside influences prior to birth as well as during their formative
years. In addition to outside influences there are other factors such as physical growth and
health that also affect their learning and development. Children need to be exposed to different
stages of play (solitary to cooperative) to assist in this learning development. The teacher will
assist children, through guidance and instruction, to learn and apply life skills such as decision-
making, organizing, goal-setting, and others.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning
experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that
promote all students’ learning.
 Summary: The teacher will recognize that students have diverse backgrounds that influence their
learning and will implement strategies and modifications in lessons to assist the student in their
learning experience. The teacher will understand that diversity is not limited to ethnicity and
economical differences, but also include many other variables such as gender, language and
other disabilities.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction
and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.
 Summary: The teacher will understand the importance of developing lessons in the classroom so
that it will develop logical and thematical learning for not only the student’s present situation
but also for application in the world beyond school. This instruction and learning will serve as
preparation for assessments which the teacher understands is necessary to evaluate student’s
knowledge and skills.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning
and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate
assessments.
 Summary: The teacher will plan a variety of engaging lessons that adhere to the diverse
student’s needs. Understanding that students not only need textual information, but also need
hands on experiences that use their senses and other fine motor skills as well. The teacher will
develop a variety of opportunities to reinforce learning that incorporates these different teaching
styles to stimulate their mental and logical thinking process.

Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity
and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe and
productive.

 Summary: The teacher will create a positive classroom environment that promotes learning and
respecting each other’s diverse backgrounds and experiences. The teacher will create and safe
and nurturing environment to reassure the student’s have a safe harbor both physically and
mentally.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning
environment and for managing student behavior.
 Summary: The teacher will develop and demonstrate organization to promote productive
learning which will subsequently promote positive behavior in students. The teacher recognizes
that children need structure and continuity to relax and be open to learning. The teacher will
utilize different tool, manual as well as technical, to promote organization, structure, etc.
Students will be involved in developing and communicating expectations for rules, procedures
and this will incorporate consequences.

Competency 007: The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating
effectively in varied teaching and learning contexts.
 Summary: The teacher will implement varied techniques to encourage discussions with students
to create an open line of communication. The teacher will develop discussion prompting
strategies to promote student interaction to aide in learning.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the
learning process
 Summary: The teacher will develop varied methods to instruct the lesson which engages the
students verbally and technologically. These lessons will stimulate the student’s involvement
and promote participation. The lessons will be developed for all levels and variations of
mechanics, grammar and language while promoting self-motivation.

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and
evaluate instruction for all students.
 Summary: The teacher understands that all children have different learning styles; therefore, will
use different approaches so that he/she can reach all the different styles. In addition, the
teacher will modify lessons and activities dependent on the child’s needs. The teacher will
incorporate a variety of technology and other skills to prepare, deliver and utilize student use to
carry out the lesson.

Competency 010: The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with
timely, high quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.
 Summary: The teacher will utilize and monitor various assessment techniques and provide
graded instructional material back to the student in a positive and productive manner. These
assessments will be in conjunction to goals and objectives developed that are congruent with the
developed standards.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s
education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

 Summary: The teacher will prepare varied methods to frequently communicate with the parents
to promote their involvement as well as keep them informed of activities and progress.
Communication methods will not only be electronic, but also written and verbal when
opportunities allow through school functions.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with
other members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional
activities.
 Summary: The teacher will be actively involved with peers and other professionals to collaborate
on lessons, school activities and other aspects that involve the school and community. The
teacher recognizes that self-assessment, and working with supervisors for assessment are
necessary and productive help to improve instruction and learning environment.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators
and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.
 Summary: The teacher will follow legal requirements relating to education-related situations
(special education, students’ and families’ rights, discipline, equity, child abuse). In addition, the
teacher will comply with ethical guidelines regarding educators as will as legal and ethical
requirements regarding resources and technology. The teacher will follow procedures pertaining
to student records. The teacher will maintain an ethical demeanor in the educational system
while advocating for the profession and student.
