Social Location Inventory

Address each of the following areas in one paragraph each.

Gender
1. How does your gender identification relate with that of the dominant
culture? The same or different? Is it problematic?
I personally feel that males are the dominant gender, for instance male
sports are commonly viewed than female sports and political offices tend to
be held by male figures. Yes to some point, as there is always the issue of
equality between gender. However, women do tend to think with there
emotions rather then working through dilemma’s rationally.

2. Is your gender location an advantage or disadvantage?

Its an advantage because in my opinion it opens more doors professionally
and gives me an edge. For instance, a male soccer player has a lot more
opportunities globally to experience diverse football styles of play then a
female soccer player would. USA and England are the only two big countries
which have established professional leagues.

Culture/Ethnicity
1. Are you a member of the dominant culture? Is this an advantage or a
disadvantage?

Being part of the Western culture has helped me nurture skills I can and will
take all over the world. This evident among the general population in the
amount of income they have their life longevity and industries success their
respective countries have.
2. Are you bicultural? Do you consider this an advantage or
disadvantage? What is your preferred culture?

Yes I am bicultural. Being from a very diverse background gives me an

advantage knowing why different people think and act the way they do. I
prefer my mother’s African heritage instead of my father’s Middle Eastern as
it has a less egocentric outlook.

3. Is your cultural location an advantage or disadvantage?

Yes its an advantage because being in the middle class gives me an

opportunity to move up in the economic ladder by being driven and
constantly achieving goals.

Race

1
1. Are you a member of the dominant race? A marginal race? An
oppressed race?

I am a member of the marginal race, because feel I am not oppressed and

definitely not a member of the dominant race. My race is often considered
inferior.

2. Is your racial identity an advantage or disadvantage?

Disadvantage, because I feel that the terrorist stereotype is very racial to
the point that it actually hurts my self esteem and makes me feel
unwanted in America.

Class
1. Into which economic class were you born? Are you in the same class
today?
2. Have you ever belonged to an “invisible” class (e.g. displaced,
chronically un- or underemployed, disabled, etc.)?
3. Has your education improved your class standing?
4. Is your class location an advantage or disadvantage?

I was fortunate enough to be born and raised in a middle class family.

Twenty three years down the line and I am still happy to live amongst a
middle class society. I am blessed in many ways by our Lord, and managed
to stay I in the visible class. My education thus far has helped me interact,
socialize and understand higher class standings, not necessarily improve it.
My class location is an advantage, as I can see life from both perspectives;
the higher and lower class. I have thus learnt that it is of the utmost
importance to respect and appreciate what I have and to not look above me
and see what other higher class society have, when all I have to do is look
underneath me and see what the lower class doesn’t have.

Religion
1. Were you raised in a religious tradition? What did that tradition teach
you about the interpretation of the Bible?
2. Are you presently participating in a religious tradition? How does that
tradition make use of the Bible?
3. Are you a member of the dominant religious group? Of a religious
minority?
4. Is your religious location an advantage or disadvantage?

I have been brought up following the guidelines and preaching’s of Islam. I

have embedded traits which have brought me very far in life and continue to

2
help me prosper. Attributes that I have taken from the faith have made me
humble but yet challenging toward daily struggles. This tradition has taught
me that the bible is a message for mankind from God and that Jesus Christ is
a prominent father figure in the world. Yes I am part of the dominant
religious group, my location is an advantage as I get to meet a lot of new
people within the tradition.

Major life issues

1. How has your life been affected by divorce, illness, relocation, death of
a loved one or other traumatic experiences.

I honestly believe that I have had an amazing life, and I am truly blessed by
the lord, and whatever I do in this world will never pay the debt I owe to God.
I have been extremely fortunate that thus far I have faced no major
traumatic experiences.
