CHAPTER

CHEMBUZZ’18
CASE STUDY
RULES

1. All teams are required to send a soft copy of their report at aiche.gik@gmail.com before 25th
April, 2018. Failing to do so will result in disqualification from the module.
2. The subject of the mail should be of the following format: “ChemBuzz’18-Case Study-Team
name”.
3. The report must not exceed 12 pages. Failing to do so will result in negative marking or
disqualification.
4. After screening, top ten teams will be notified on 27th April, 2018 who will then present their
idea in front of the panel. Teams will be required to submit a hard copy of their report 2 hours
before the module starts.
5. Total time to present your idea will be 6 minutes followed by a question and answer session.
Presentation must not exceed 5 slides. Violating any of them will result in negative marking.
6. Your idea must be realistic, innovative and implementable.
7. The decision of the panel would be final and cannot be questioned.
8. Teams are required not to help each other or communicate their idea in anyway. Failing to do
so will result in the disqualification from the module or from the event.

PROBLEM
Earth average global temperature has been increasing since industrial revolution. Global
temperature represents the average over the entire surface of our planet. It merely depends upon
how much energy has been absorbed and how much has been emitted back into space. The emitted
energy depends upon the atmosphere’s composition. The presence of greenhouse gases has caused
the emission of energy into space to decrease dramatically, increasing the global average
temperature of our home. According to a temperature analysis conducted by scientists at NASA’s
Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the average global temperature on Earth has increased
by about 0.8° Celsius (1.4° Fahrenheit) since 1880. Two-thirds of the warming has occurred since
1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade.
Greenhouse gases are mainly composed of Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated
gases. As of 2014, Carbon dioxide emissions compared to other greenhouse gases has been much
greater. A trend below shows that since 1960 carbon dioxide emissions has been increasing rapidly
all around the world. According to International energy agency, Carbon dioxide emissions has
remained stagnant from 2014-2016 but the emissions are expected to increase again. According to
some experts, at current emission rate, the average global temperature would increase by 1.5
degree Celsius before 2030.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has informed higher authorities that Pakistan will
face severe climatic conditions than any other of the neighboring countries due to climate change.
Upon the recommendation of PMD, an immediate high level meeting has been called involving
the Prime Minister, Minister of finance, Minister of Power, PMD and other relevant ministries and
departments. After analyzing the whole situation, it is decided that the current carbon dioxide
emissions along with other greenhouse gases emissions must be decreased to its half within
next 5 years and country must switch to renewable/carbon free energy within next decade.
The government will be reviewing proposals from different companies and will choose only one
with whom it will partner to achieve its objective.
Due to your team’s highest success rate, your employer, AGSC, has decided to handover this
project to you. Your team has to come up with a strategy which is cost effective, efficient and also
sustainable. Your employer has demanded to include the following in your report:
1. A thorough analysis of the problem.
2. Detailed explanation of your team’s strategy.
3. Detailed cost analysis of your proposed strategy.
4. Immediate and long term impact upon country’s climate.
5. Immediate and long term impact upon country’s economy.
6. Immediate and long term impact upon country’s citizens.
7. An executive summary
If your strategy is based upon different researches, technologies, engineering tools and practices
and it also include facts and figures along with graphs and tables in your report, your chances to
land a government contract would increase significantly.
