Dear Dr.

Bruce,

Over the course of this semester, I have thought about and engaged with the six Student
Learning Objectives (SLOs) listed on the syllabus. This final portfolio contains a selection of the
writing I have produced this semester so that I can demonstrate how I have applied the SLOs in
my writing. This portfolio contains four assignments, each of which fulfills one or more SLOs:
this cover letter, my iFixit group’s project proposal, group charter, and my revised progress
report.

The first document that my portfolio includes is this cover letter, which fulfills three
SLOs: rhetorical focus, organization, and language and design. This cover letter demonstrates
rhetorical focus. Because of its audience, the letter takes a formal style that uses proper spelling,
punctuation, and grammar. This cover letter also demonstrates organized design. While writing, I
thought about the purpose of the letter: to summarize and to persuade. Because of these two
purposes, I employed an understandable structure. Each paragraph deals with a document that I
wrote during the semester and explains how that document fulfills SLOs. Finally, the letter
incorporates elements of language and design. I used clear and straightforward sentence structure
and word choice.

The next document in my portfolio is my iFixit team’s project proposal. This proposal
fulfills the collaboration SLO. While working on the proposal, my teammates split up the writing
and collaborated on a shared document. We provided feedback to each other and improved each
other’s writing, which improved the document as a whole. Later, we participated in a peer
revision with other teams. We used the advice that we received from the other teams to improve
our proposal’s clarity.

The third document in my portfolio is my iFixit team’s group charter, which fulfills the
ethical citation SLO. I included information from both Markel and Wolfe in my team’s charter to
support group decisions such as work policies and communication procedures. I used in-text
citations and a reference list to source this information in APA style.

The final document in my portfolio is my revised iFixit project progress report. This
progress report fulfills four SLOs: rhetorical focus, persuasion, organization, and language and
design. It fulfills rhetorical focus by keeping purpose in mind. Since one major purpose of my
progress report was to inform, each sentence and bullet point delivers information about the
status of my project. My progress report also fulfills the persuasion SLO. In the report, I prove
that my team is on track to complete the project by including a list of completed work and a list
of remaining work. These sections and lists are distinct and easily readable with clear headings,
supporting the organization SLO. Finally, my progress report supports the language and design
SLO through its use of direct word choice, parallel structure within lists, and attention to
informative verbs.

By paying attention to the six SLO’s of this class and the principles of effective writing
and design, I have strengthened my writing by providing technical foundations that I can use in
my classes and in the workplace. As I continue to learn more communication techniques, these
foundations will remain valuable and will continue to help me make improvements as a writer.
Sincerely,

Kiyan Mullen
