1. BACKGROUND

It is observed that at some of roof top pole the BTS antenna’s azimuth and tilt adjustment is
difficult to be done and optimization is being obstructed due to the BTS antenna is installed at
same pole with MW antennas and other reasons. This might impact the performance or service of
the BTS antenna. To avoid such of problem is being repeated this guideline document is required.

2. TYPICAL INSTALLATION PROBLEM AT SITES

Below are typical problem found at sites during BTS antenna azimuth and tilt adjustment:

a. Blocked by feeder support plate

b. Blocked by pole’s step bolt

c. Blocked by Microwave antenna

3. Description

3.1 Feeder Support Plate

To route the feeder cable properly the pole is equipped with feeder support plate to tight the
feeder cable. The feeder cable support is clamped to pole body using “U” shape clamp plate. The
feeder cable support position is adjustable.

If we have found installed feeder support plates are blocking the BTS antenna installation and/or
azimuth and tilt adjustment we can simply reposition the feeder cable support by loosen the
clamp bolts then move the feeder cable support to higher or lower available position so that the
BTS antenna can be adjusted freely and easily.

3.2 Pole’s Step Bolt

To climb the pole easily for installing and maintaining the antennas the pole is equipped with
fixed step bolt.

If we have found the fixed step bolts are blocking the BTS antenna installation and/or azimuth
and tilt adjustment it is recommended to cut the particular step bolt. Cut off area at the pole
body should be properly handled; cold galvanizing should be done to avoid rust and corrosion.

Below figure shows the cut of the step bolt.

Figure 4. Cut of the Step Bolt

To avoid blocking fixed step bolt during pole installation, it is recommended to synchronize the
fixed step bolt direction with BTS antenna azimuth. The first section/part of the pole body
installation at the anchors should be arranged in such way hence the fixed step bolt direction is
not same with the antenna azimuth and/or the fixed step bolt direction is not on rotation area of
the antenna.

As well as the second and first section/part connection work during installation, it should be taken
care so that the fixed step bolt direction is not same with the antenna azimuth and/or the fixed
step bolt direction is not on rotation area of the antenna.

In the future the step bolt should be redesigned from fixed ones become removable hence when
the step bolt position is blocking the antenna azimuth and tilt adjustment, it can be removed.

Below figure shows the removable step bolt.

3.3 MW Antenna Placement

3.3.1 Place the MW Antenna at Different Pole

The easiest way to avoid blocking BTS antenna azimuth and tilt adjustment by MW antenna
placement is putting the MW antenna at different pole with BTS antenna pole. But this is needed
to be reconfirmed with and prepared by SITAC team during acquisition process to ensure there is
no space and rent price issues. The consequence is there will be additional cost for providing
more pole

3.3.2 Place the MW Antenna Higher or Lower than BTS Antenna at Same Pole

When there is no possibility to provide separate pole for MW antenna due to space constraint or
due to high rental price increment caused by construct more pole, it is recommended to place the
MW antenna at higher or lower position from the BTS antenna position so that there is free space
for the BTS antenna azimuth and tilt adjustment as well as space for routing the cable feeder
properly. Please be aware prior to lifting or lowering the MW antenna, ensure the LOS and
performance of its MW antenna will not be impacted by the new position.

Below figure shows placing MW antenna higher or lower than BTS antenna

3.3.3 Add Bracket and Pipe for Mounting the BTS Antenna

When there is no possibility to place the MW antenna higher or lower than BTS antenna due to
pole height limitation or LOS issue hence MW antenna is installed at same height with BTS
antenna, it is recommended to provide additional bracket and pipe to mount the BTS antenna so
that there is free space for the BTS antenna azimuth and tilt adjustment.

Below figure show pole with adding bracket and pipe for mounting BTS antenna
