Good growth in grassroots sport

The Bacchus Marsh Scorpions are celebrating 10-years
on the soccer field this year.
The local club was established in 2008 and at the time
fielded just three teams in the Football Federation
Victoria leagues.
The following year, the number of registered teams
doubled. Today, over 150 players make up 14 teams,
including the Miniroos small sided soccer teams,
competitive juniors and seniors sides for both men and
women.
Club Secretary, Kersty Brown said to celebrate 10-years,
the club, with the help of their major sponsors, have
invested in new playing kits for the entire club.
“The dynamic new design was put together by the
committee and produced by SportFirst in Bacchus
Marsh,” she said.
“Michelle at SportFirst made sure the design was
exact, the fabric of high quality and the logos in the best
position for maximum exposure.
“With major sponsors Food Works Bacchus Marsh,
Bendigo Bank Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley Brown
Coal the club was able to invest in the smart new look”.
Mason’s Lane Reserve is the home ground of the
Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club, with teams taking to field
on most Sunday’s between April and September.
“With a strong committee leading the club, dedicated
volunteers and an outstanding coaching line up, the
club continues to grow and produce some of the West’s
finest Soccer players,” Ms Brown said.
The Scorpions train on Wednesday and Friday nights
at either Mason’s Lane Reserve or Darley Community
Hub.

Iconic western-wear busi-
ness McDonald’s Saddlery
has closed its doors for the
last time.
The Bacchus Marsh-based
business held its last day of
trade on Monday, April 30,
after close to three decades.
Trish Shugg, who owns the
business with her husband
John, said the decision came
after the 120-year-old build-
ing was sold and the lease
ran out.
“I am feeling extremely sad
at this point,” she said.
“McDonald’s Saddlery is an
icon, not only here in Bac-
chus Marsh, but throughout
all of Australia and New
Zealand. This is the end of
an era”.
The saddlery first opened
in the old Bacchus Marsh
butcher premises in Febru-
ary 1990, before moving into
one half of the famous Grant
Street building.
“This place has enormous
character and has always
suited our shop right down
to the ground,” Trish said.
“The other half used to be
a ceramic place, and when
they moved out, we took
over the whole shop. We
needed that extra space
with the amount of stock
we have here, all of which
is imported from the States,
China and India in order to
give our customers the best
price”.
Trish, who has had a love
for horses her whole life,
travelled to America each
year to keep in touch with
her suppliers.
“We’ve always endeav-
oured to provide the best
possible product we can, as
well as the best customer
service,” she said.
“McDonald’s Saddlery has
never been a cold store, but a
warm and welcoming place
that gives customers the
freedom to explore, while
also providing the best ad-
vice possible.
“I think after 28-years that’s
what I’ll miss the most – the
customers and interacting
with them on a daily basis.
It’s going to be really hard to
move on from that”.
However, while the doors
on the saddlery have shut,
the Shuggs are not riding
into the sunset just yet.
Trish and John’s daughter,
Fiona has helped create a
new eCommerce Website,
which will be live from Mon-
day, May 7.
“While we will be moving
on from the hard yakka of
running a physical busi-
ness, we will still stock our
products in a warehouse just
outside of Bacchus Marsh,”
Trish said.
“Going online is going to be
a very big move, and I im-
agine the first two to three
months will be difficult
organising and adjusting,
but it will hopefully give us
more family time, and me
more time with my horses”.

sells out

The Village Shopping Centre in Bacchus
Marsh has been sold to a Melbourne property
investor for $61.65 million.
The sale followed a hotly contested
expression of interest campaign managed
by CBRE with a strong field of local, national
and international companies.
The investor, Mr Colin De Lutis has
hinted that another major national brand
supermarket could be coming to The Village.
He said introducing a new supermarket may
be considered after the shopping centre’s
operations had been reviewed thoroughly.
Mr De Lutis has significant interests in
apartments, offices, hotels, car parks and
industrial property as well as several
shopping centres.
The vendors, Abacus Property Group,
bought the shopping centre in July, 2013
with Gerard McSpadden (National Retail
Asset Manager) saying the key reason for the
decision to sell is “our corporate strategy to
focus on inner suburban, super convenience
retail shopping centres, and therefore it

Mayors Award – Luke Hallett.
Future leaders and talented artists have been announced at
the Moorabool Shire Council 2018 Youth Awards.
Youth presenters from FReeZA, Corey Williams and Jaimie
Robinson were the event Master of Ceremonies with Mayor
Paul Tatchell presenting the awards.
Judges for the Youth Art competition were Nichole Knight
and Anu Patel with the FReeZA committee organising the
event for young artists.
Four award categories included a variety of mediums.

The Youth Awards (six categories) followed the Art Awards
and is a program recognising the significant contributions
young people make to the Moorabool Shire, and is celebrated
as part of National Youth Week in April each year. The
awards are open to all young people aged 12 to 25 years who
live, work, go to school or have other significant connections
to the Moorabool Shire, and specifically recognise young
people that have:
• Made a significant contribution to the Moorabool
Community
• Achieved something significant in an area of interest
(sport, the arts etc.)
• Volunteer services to their community
• Overcome significant adversity
“This year we received an outstanding number of
nominations and the assessment panel had a difficult task in
proposing a winner for each category, due to the high calibre
of nominations,” Mayor Tatchell said.
The assessment panel included Cr John Keogh; Claire
Sutherland (BM Community Bank); Alan Morton (BM
Rotary) and Russell Hendry (BM Lions).
Community Contribution/Volunteering (12-15 years age
group) Winner – Thomas Bradford
Thomas commenced as a 12-year old with the Youth Action
Group (YAG) when it first commenced in 2014. As part of YAG
he undertakes consultation with the wider community on
various issues relating to young people, including the Youth
Charter and Youth Strategy Plan. He has helped organise
and facilitate the YAG and FReeZA events such as Youth
Community Contribution/

Sarah has been a Venturer with Scouts since 2015 and is a
vital part of the leadership team. She is eloquent, intelligent
and always reliable. Her work with Scouts is long lasting and
many of the Cubs she works with move forward into Scouts
and then Venturers. Through Venturers she volunteers
for many organisations such as Clean Up Australia Days,
collecting money for Red Cross, National Tree Day at the
local botanic gardens, volunteered at the Grand Prix for
White Ribbon as well as volunteering for Cuboree (large
Scouting camp with over 4000 young people). She is currently
undergoing the Queen Scout Award. Sarah has been involved
in SRC for the past three years at school and participated in
the Massie Murray Paddle, fundraising for the school’s sister
school in Nepal. Sarah has volunteered at the Rotary Arts
Awards for two years and is currently completing Gold Duke
of Edinburgh. She is currently a prefect leader at Bacchus
Marsh Grammar and has achieved academic excellence for
years 7-10.
Overcoming significant Adversity (16-25 years age group)
Winner – Samantha Bradfield
Samantha was diagnosed at five years old with global devel-
opment delay and severe language disorder. She has:
• Competed at State and National championships in dance
and cheerleading.
• Competed at regional, State games and championships and
in 2016 was chosen to compete at Trans-Tasman games in
New Zealand in athletics, where she won 3 gold medals
and one bronze.
This year Samantha will be participating in the National
Games for the first time. She also wants to help other
intellectually disabled children and adults discover sport
and become a coach. Samantha is about to embark on

committee of Melbourne West Special Olympics as an athlete
representative and has helped run one of the meetings. Her
interest in the committee is fundraising. Samantha is also
a graduate of the Athletes Leadership Program, a program
run jointly with Special Olympics and the Victorian Police
Force, where members of the police force act as mentors to
the athletes and they are taught public speaking skills and
are expected to prepare speeches and presentations.
Arts – (16-25 years age group) Winner – Emily Wallis
Emilly commenced learning to dance at Dream Entertain-
ment Studio in Bacchus Marsh 11 years ago as a cheerleader.
Emilly has been:
•A member of the State Championship dance team who has
won the State Championships five times
•A member of the dance team who won the National
Championships
• Involved in corporate charity events
• Invited to dance in a music video for The Elliott’s Band
•A n original member and captain of the Carlton’s Cadets
Acrobatic Team performing in front of over 40,000 people
at the MCG for the AFL and AFLW Grand finals
• Has been awarded top tumbler for her acrobatic skills
• Has won a spirit award for her support of others
Young Achiever Award Winner – Jasmin Crampton
She joined Freeza in 2014, and YAG in 2016 and still
volunteers her time today. She manages her time and has
stayed committed to both groups whilst completing year 12
and continues to do so today whilst working and attending
university. She has helped organise and facilitate the YAG
and FReeZA events such as live bands and gigs, the Zombie
Walk, BMX/Skate Competitions, Art Exhibitions, Youth
Feat and Youth Forums. Jasmin’s skills have developed over
the years and she is now in a leadership role with FReeZA
and has become an excellent leader. Jasmin has spoken at
Council meetings regarding issues affecting young people.
She commits 100% of her time and energy to any project that
she is involved in. Jasmin has exceptional leadership and
event management skills and is now pursuing these interests
through her university course.
Mayor’s Award Winner – Luke Hallett
Luke is a member with the Ballan Scouts and volunteers his
time to work with the 1st Ballan Joey Mob (primary children
aged 5-8 years). He demonstrates an amazing ability and
passion to working with primary school aged children.
Luke is an integral part of the leadership team that delivers
quality programs aimed at extending the comfort zones of
the youngest children, while helping them achieve the aims
of Scouting by taking a constructive place in society.

Council’s draft Child Safety Standards and

Reportable Conduct Scheme Policies are officially
out for public feedback.
State government legislation required councils to
develop similar policies following the 2013 ‘Betrayal
of Trust’ report, which came after an inquiry into
the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and
Other Organisations.
The policy meets the report’s recommendations of
compulsory minimum standards for creating child-
safe environment because council provides services
to children, and includes standards to prevent child
abuse, encourage reporting of abuse and increase
the effectiveness of responses to allegations of child
abuse.

William taking line honours; Mackenzie Estlick was the first girl across the finish line. Xavier
Goodman was first home in the Under 11 & 12 2000 metre event while Danielle claimed first
place this week. Over the 3000 metre event for the Open Age athletes, it was Jack Mutsaerts
taking the win, while for the girls, Kirsty Bresnan and Tamara Henry had a close race with
Kirsty just pipping Tamara on the line.
Next Saturday’s Cross-Country meet will be held at Lady Northcote Camp, Rowsley at
Gisborne parents Nicole and Chris 10.30am.

DEVILS NEXT GEN WARD AND
DODEMAIDE DEBUT
Whilst Darley rues its second loss on the
scoreboard in as many weeks, the future
looks bright.
Darley coach Heath Scotland had no
hesitation blooding youngsters Mitch Ward
and Jai Dodemaide into the fray for their first
taste of senior footy in last Saturday’s one
point loss to Sunbury.
Their selections came on the back of another
debutant and product of the junior program
Andrew Azzopardi the previous week.
The three young guns rotated through
the wing, forward pocket and interchange,
Coach Scotland ensuring suitable game time
and exposure into the boys.
Ward and Dodemaide will reflect and
remember their debuts for completely
different reasons.
Dodemaide, 17, courageously set up Darley’s
opening goal running back with the flight of
the ball. His ‘no fear’ effort in the opening
minutes led to him being catapulted into the
air and then later transferred to hospital at
half-time for medical attention. Jai suffered
broken ribs as a result and will likely miss
a month.
On the other hand Ward, 17, wasn’t as
misfortunate. According to Coach Scotland,
Mitch had a sense of belonging. His
composure and cleanliness with the ball was

(Mitch) Ward is the son of two-time Darley
premiership player Rod Ward and nephew
of former Devils Henderson medalist Shayne
Ward.
Both Dodemaide and Ward were presented
with their jumpers pre-game by Darley
legend Travis Edwards.
DEVILS DEALT CRUEL SEASON
ENDING BLOW
Darley hard-nut Dan Roy will miss the rest
of the 2018 season after scans on his right
knee confirmed the worst, a rupture/tear
of the ACL. Roy was injured in the second
quarter of the Devils opening round win
against Bacchus Marsh.
Recruited by the club in 2017 after successful
stints in the Geelong and Goulburn
Valley Football leagues, Roy’s impact was
immediate, playing an integral role in the
Devils’ premiership winning season.
Darley coach Heath Scotland was devastated
with the news for both Dan and the Club.
“Dan is a senior player at our club, he’ll be
sorely missed. HIs ability in and under to
impact the contest was first class. He’ll be
hard to replace.”
Roy, 29, later conceded to the Club the injury
has spelled a pre-mature end to his football
career.

BACCHUS MARSH simply
outclassed a youthful North
Ballarat City at the weekend,
winning comfortably by 93
points.
Any hint of a major upset
was put to bed early as the
Cobras booted seven goals
to nil in the opening term - a
complete domination.
Cobras ruckman Daniel
Burton gave first use of the
ball to his hungry midfield
who were starved of footy
having come off the bye the
previous week. Inside mids
Jacob Chisari and 200-gamer
Tyson Shea were foolproof
early while the outside
run and finishing skills of
captain Scott Sherlock was
a stand out. The Cobras
repeated entries into the
forward 50, in the first and
third terms especially, had
the City defenders on the
back foot and unable to stop
the bleeding.
Ben Speight (4 goals) lived
up to the hype, his clean
hands through traffic, agil-
ity and footy smarts were a
level above. Athletic forward
Aarron Willets (6 goals) is a
prime example of reward for
effort and work rate. Willets
consistently presents all day,
marks and finishes well. His
GPS numbers would be in
the elite category of any key
forward in the competition.
Jake Owen (4 goals) turned
City’s headache to a mi-
graine. While his contested
marking, goalkicking, ruck
work forward to advantage
are features we’re getting
used to, it was his forward
pressure and ability at
ground level that impressed.
Let’s be honest, the Cobras
best is very good. But for how
long can they sustain their
‘very good’ in matches? This
will be the challenge handed
to coach Travis Hodgson and
the playing group over the
coming weeks and one that
he is well aware of. He was
humble in his assessment.
“Overall it (the win) was
very pleasing... the reality
is we need to be better for
longer. When we’re not play-
ing well, we leak goals far
too easily,” Hodgson said.
Despite the one-sided re-
sult, the Cobras won just
two quarters. They kicked 17
goals to one with the breeze
over the first and third terms
- game over. The authority
and the ease at which the
Cobras hit the scoreboard
suggested the wind advan-
tage was greater than 3-4
goals but it wasn’t the case.
When the Cobras were on
they were just unstoppable.
North Ballarat on the other
hand, conceding experience
and depth, had few winners
on the day but the efforts of
Will Young (6 goals) in a los-
ing side was worth noting.
Young, a former Adelaide
Crow draftee made the
most of minimal forward 50
entries with his endurance
and mark-up ability. The key
forward put some respect
into his side’s efforts on the
scoreboard.
The Marsh victory was
soured late in the game with
the injury to captain Scott
Sherlock who left the field
clutching a dislocation of his
left shoulder. Club trainers
were able to ‘pop it’ back in
in good time, and minimise
the damage. Sherlock is
certain to miss against Mel-
ton South this Saturday and
looms as a likely withdrawal
from the BFNL Interleague
team, who are scheduled to
meet the Goulburn Valley
at the MCG the following
week.
Simon Lafranchi’s recent
run of bad luck with injury
continues. The half-back
flanker started well in his re-
turn game before succumb-
ing to a groin strain late in
the day and a 3-4 week stint
on the sidelines appears the
likely prognosis. Also, on
the outer is Cobras defender
Lachie Phyland who too will
miss this week after being
sighted for striking.
In more welcoming news
for the club, hard running
premiership player Logan
Blundell looks set to return
for his first game this year.
Cobras favorite son Tyson
Shea (2 goals) in his 200th
game was applauded as he
left the field post-match on
the shoulders of his team-
mates. The milestone, the
appreciation and the joys
of victory all reflected in
a cheesy grin and a hand-
raised salute to the crowd.

The Junior Cobras enjoyed some magic weather for their first home
game of the season. We played the Ballarat Lakers at Maddingley
Park. We also had our first family night hosted by the under 10s. It
was a great chance for Cobras families to get together especially the
new families to the club.
Junior Footy
The 3 under 10 sides are developing really well. They are working
well together and importantly they all seem to be really enjoying
the game. The Under 12 reserves fell short but learnt a lot from a
very classy side. The under 12 seniors lost their match and need to
do some more work on their ball gets. The under 14 reserves just
weren’t quick enough for a very fast playing side and lost 75-27. The
under 14 seniors played a tight game but didn’t quite make it with a

5 point loss. The Under 16.5 reserves were the only win for the day
62-49. The solahart Youth Girls played their best game to date with

der 17 reserves were the only junior netball win for the day 32 – 28.

Winery hosts muscle cars

I arrived at St. Anne’s in Myrniong astonished at the

massive expanses of show cars which stretched across the
estate at the recent Classic Muscle Car Show.
You could not choose a more idyllic location for such an
event. The McLean family built the estate and have owned
and operated this winery since 1972. The architecture is
symbolic of those times, rugged timber and stone, which
provides a warm character to the many uses, one of the
most popular being a wedding venue.
Organiser Josh says the Classic Car Club chose the Winery
as a location because they “wanted to provide an enjoyable
family day - motoring, wine, good food, a market and some
great dance music”.
Many hundreds of all categories of vehicles were parked
for visitors to view. There were associated trade stalls
around the winery buildings, and a large market and food
truck/caravan village serving families enjoying their day
out together. It was easy to find the Rockabilly music and
dancers; it blasted out of the main hall and on the dance
floor, couples worked up a sweat, gyrating to the fantastic
sounds of the 50s and 60s.
Having eaten lunch, my wife and I checked out all the
stalls and one interesting one, manned by Terry from
Gisborne, caught my eye, because I had spoken to him at the
Marsh Rodders, Maddingley Park Swap Meet, earlier this
year. Terry is very talented and makes miniature motoring
and railway dioramas and garage/workshop scenes in
miniature, which he sells at markets. (See image)
As we had walked into the main food area, I had spied a
car display area, down a slope and in a picturesque gully
and said to Jan, we must check that out, why it’s separate
from the other displays. It appeared this held some of
the more unusual vehicles, and a teardrop camper had
us quickening our steps as we are big fans of these retro
units. We walked down the slope and a striking blue coupe
caught my gaze. I said to Jan, with excitement, “I know that
car, I think it’s on the cover of Cruzin magazine!” It surely
was - this immaculate 34 Chev had its boot open and the
owner, Darian Morano, had displayed there some copies
of the popular monthly mag, with pages open to show the
featured story of his spectacular ‘glass rod. Peeked inside
the yellow teardrop caravan and marvelled at the Ford GT
40 race car nearby.
Altogether, a wonderful and stimulating Sunday outing
and easy to see the crowds loved it with the numbers
attending bursting at the seams.
