Introduction: Architecture, Common Terms and Definitions
Commvault Architecture
For the purposes of this guide, we will review the basic components and terms that will be referenced throughout. The
software platform is a ground-breaking level, integrated data and information management solution, built from the ground up
on a single platform and unified code base. All functions share the same back-end technologies to deliver the unparalleled
advantages and benefits of a truly holistic approach to protecting, managing, and accessing data. The software contains
modules to protect and archive, analyze, replicate, and search your data, which all share a common set of back-end services
and advanced capabilities, seamlessly interacting with one another. This addresses all aspects of data management in the
enterprise, while providing infinite scalability and unprecedented control of data and information.

Common Terms and Definitions

Commcell – The term that is used to describe the entire Commvault installation base within a given environment. A
Commcell is made up of a single Commserve, at least one Media Agent, the associated storage, and the client servers running
Intelligent Data Agents.

Commserve -- Master Server in charge of Metadata, GUI Delivery, Job Management, and all Policy Enforcement.

Media Agent – Data Management Server in charge of writing data to Targets (Disk, Tape, Cloud). Also maintains the
appropriate Data Indexes for recovery.

Intelligent Data Agent (iDA) – Software that is installed on Source/Client computers that manage operations on that client
for all Commvault Data Management Activities (Data Protection, Archive, Replication, etc.). There are two distinct types of
IDA’s; File System (for the base OS and associated files), and Application (for Server Based Apps that house data which will

5
be managed/protected). For Example, an Exchange Server would require a File System iDA (for Windows), and an Exchange
Application iDA (for protecting the Exchange Data).

Disk – For the purposes of this document, “Disk” is defined as any storage device, other than Tape or Optical Drives.
Examples include (but are not limited to) Direct Attached Storage, Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage
(NAS). Cloud Storage is also considered a Disk-based storage resource.

Tape Drive – Any tape device that is online and actively managed or written to by a Commvault Media Agent.

Backup – In the context of Commvault Data Protection and Management, “Backup” refers to the action of copying data from
a source, and writing a copy elsewhere (i.e., Tape, Disk, Cloud). Multiple copies of said data can be written to multiple
targets as part of a Backup Operation.

Archive – In the context of Commvault Data Protection and Management, “Archive” is defined as removing data from its
original source and moving it somewhere else to facilitate space savings in the primary source. Data can be moved to any of
the typical targets (Tape, Disk, Cloud) and retained for a period at the discretion of the administrator. Data can be recalled, if
needed, into the original storage space either by an administrator, or by an end user who has appropriate rights to the data.

E-mail Journal – A mailbox that stores copies of all mail sent and/or received within a mail environment. This is typically
used when Compliance Archiving is necessary.

OnePass – This is a Commvault-specific term that represents the concept of combining Data Protection, Archive, and File
Analytics functionality into a single agent that manages all three workloads in a single scan of a given data set.

Auxiliary Copy – A redundant copy of an original backup/archive copy that is created. This can be stored on any type of
target (Disk, Tape, Cloud) and can be used for recovery purposes if the primary backup/archive copy is unavailable.

Synthetic Full – A full backup job that is compiled by aggregating a previous full backup and the ensuing incremental jobs
into a new standalone full backup copy without having to re-scan or re-transmit front end data to the Content Store.

DASH Copy – Deduplication Aware Auxiliary Copies of backup data. The copy is made by only sending unique blocks of data
across the network, significantly reducing time to completion and network burden.

DASH Full – A Synthetic Full job that leverages Commvault’s Deduplication Technology. The job is much faster than a
traditional synthetic full because very little data needs to be written.

Replication – In the Context of Commvault Data Protection and Management, “Replication” refers to taking live production
data and copying it to another online production server for the purposes of a quick failover in the case of an outage on the
primary source. Replication is facilitated by Commvault’s Continuous Data Replication (CDR) Feature.

Front End Data Capacity – The amount of Data that is captured to be protected by Commvault Software. In Data
Protection terms, this is roughly equivalent to a summation of all full backup jobs. In OnePass Terms, Front End is measured
by the last Full or Synthetic Full Job and any ensuing Incremental Jobs.

Target Storage Capacity – This is the total amount of disk space used to house data management jobs. This does not
directly reflect the amount of production data that is protected. For instance, if 1TB of “Front End Data” is backed up every
week, and three weeks of data is retained at all times on disk (with no deduplication enabled), 3TB of Target Capacity would
be required. Note that data stored on Tape does not affect Target Capacity.

Books Online – This is the online reference manual for all technical specifications and configuration details for Commvault’s
portfolio of software products. Books Online can be found at http://documentation.commvault.com

6
The Commvault Licensing Framework
Overview
Commvault Software is broken down into three primary categories;

 Software that resides on production systems, manages the system

appropriately, and captures/moves data (Manage)
 Software that is used to store copies of data and provide access to
those copies (Protect)
 Software that is used to connect to and provide enhanced value to
the data that has been stored by Commvault (Activate)

Commvault Licensing uses this set of concepts as the framework for license
classification and articulation. As new products and features are introduced,
this framework will be used to determine how that product/feature is
licensed.

Licensing Programs
Commvault offers several ways to procure and manage licensing. Each program has its distinct advantages over the other,
and provides for clear choices based on a customer’s preference.

SOLUTION SETS PLATFORM MODEL CAPACITY LICENSING

Discrete, Standalone Solutions Platform Based Solutions Backup/Archive Solutions per TB

Solution Sets – Commvault’s Solution Set program offers a simple and targeted approach for customers looking to backup
and archive data. The packages are built with a client software grant, and a specific 150TB backend infrastructure grant to
support that client’s workload. These packages are best suited for customers who are looking to deploy only one or two of
the pieces of the Commvault Software Portfolio.

Platform Model – The Commvault Platform Model takes the main philosophies of the Solution Set program and extend them
to the larger enterprise workloads, such as Big Data Management and Software Defined Storage/Scale-Out scenarios. This
license model ensures that a customer is licensing exactly the software required, and makes no assumptions on the amount of
infrastructure required to support the solution. As Commvault’s platform is built on shared infrastructure, the Platform Model
honors that concept by not adding more arbitrary infrastructure costs simply because another client is licensed. This model is
best suited for customers with larger data sets and those who have deployed three or more of the Commvault solutions.

Capacity License Agreement – The ultimate in software licensing flexibility, the Capacity License Program unlocks
unlimited use of the backup client software and the infrastructure to store data, and allows a customer to license the product
on a single metric. Tied directly to the amount of data that is protected, a customer has the ability to deploy, move, and
undeploy software without having to wrestle with new licenses or limitations. So long as the data being protected fits the
profile of the license held, and remains within the capacity owned, there are no limitations on the backup or archive features.
Consumption reporting within the software shows how much capacity has been consumed vs. the owned licensing, and data
growth reports can help predict and plan for future license acquisition.

8
Solution Set Licensing
Overview
Commvault’s Solution Set Program offers a simple and targeted approach for customers looking to backup and archive data.
The packages are built with a client software grant, and finite backend infrastructure to support that client’s workload. These
packages are best suited for customers who are looking to deploy only one or two of the pieces of the Commvault Software
Portfolio.

Application of the Licensing Framework to the Solution Set Program

All Solution Set Licenses simultaneously cover the Manage and Protect Aspects of the Commvault Software Portfolio. Every
Solution Set license supplies a licensed user with specific limited software (typically Intelligent Data Agents) to reside in
production, and software to be used for storing copies of the data. The Solution Set Program provides Commvault
Infrastructure to support up to 150TB of data stored on disk and cloud under management. This data footprint is measured
after all Commvault data reduction technologies have been applied (Compression, Deduplication), but before any third party
compression or deduplication technologies have been used. These limitations do not dictate the number of Media Agent
Servers that can be deployed, leaving configuration options to the discretion of the architect. For customers who need to
exceed the upper limits set forth by the Solution Set Program, the Commvault Platform Model provides a larger scale
alternative without the capacity restrictions of the Solution Set.

Advanced Solutions are also available under the Solution Set Program, and in many cases share a similar metric to the
Solution Set itself. It is important to note however that those licenses, while often supplied in a bundle with a Solution Set,
are distinctly separate offerings.

Client-based (On-Server) Data Protection

The client-based (On-Server) Solution Sets are designed to supply the full Intelligent Data Agent (File System, Application,
NAS) for data protection, with a fixed capacity-based footprint.

Active Products:

First Simpana Commvault
License Name Availability Simpana 8 Simpana 9 10 11
File Level Backup & Restore with OnePass 5/20/2016 X
Application Level Backup & Recovery 5/20/2016 X
NAS Backup & Recovery 5/20/2016 X

What is Counted?

Backup and Recovery for File and Application is counted by the Operating Instance. The total number of deployed and
configured File Agents and Application Agents will map to the number of licenses required.

For NAS, the license requirement is mapped to the number of NAS Clients configured. Each NAS Client is capable of
protecting data through a single IP address.

9
Operating Instance: Any Physical or Virtual Operating Environment with a distinct server name or identity that contains an
active Commvault Intelligent Data Agent. This includes physical, cloud, or virtual machines that have active Commvault
Agents installed within them.

What is not Counted?

Operating Instances that have Commvault Intelligent Agents deployed within them in an inactive or “Recovery-Only” state,
whereby no active protection jobs are configured to run (either at the File System or Application Level), will not be counted
towards the overall OI Total.

What is Granted?

The Solution Set Model itself provides software rights for a single client software configuration. Additionally, all Commvault
infrastructure pieces (Commserve, Media Agent, Web Services, etc.) required to deliver the functionality associated with the
given Solution Set package will be granted in unlimited installation quantities, so long as the data being ingested or managed
by those components does not exceed the Client Grants provided with the Solution Set. File, Application, and NAS Solution
Set licenses carry a one-time aggregate grant to protect up to 150 Back-End Terabytes within a single Commcell.

Product-Specific Notes:

Backup & Recovery for Applications – Application Class Grants -- Commvault Application Agents are classified into
three groups (Class 1, 2, & 3), generally associated to their complexity and commonality in the market. The Solution Set for
Application Backup and Recovery will supply coverage for any application within these classes, and will provide an allocation
10
to use 1 of each type to cover all potential usage scenarios. While all three license types will be provided, the license
obligation remains as one license per Operating Instance.

Backup & Recovery for File – Cluster Rights – When protecting servers in an active/passive failover cluster, Commvault
employs a “Cluster File Agent” which resides within the cluster instance and moves with that instance to whichever server
resource owns it at a given time. Underneath that cluster instance, a File System Intelligent Data Agent is installed on each
node in the cluster. For the purposes of the Solution Sets, each node in the cluster will require a Backup & Recovery license
for File Systems, however, rights for the shared cluster agent will be granted without an additional license requirement.

Backup & Recovery for NAS – Cluster Rights – In cases where NAS devices are clustered, a Commvault NAS client
license will be required for each unique IP address from which Backup/Archive activity will be undertaken.

Mixing Client-based (On-Server) Data Protection Solution Sets with other Licenses

The Commvault Solution Set program is meant to be a self-contained program in which no other license models (Capacity
License, Platform License) are required to deliver a full solution. Customers must elect to use a license model that best fits
the needs of their entire environment. As such, the client-based Solution Set may not be mixed with Capacity or Platform
Models.

For customers who own client-based Solution Set, and later wish to move to a different licensing model, Commvault will
provide a conversion methodology to allow for a seamless transition from one program into another.

What is Counted:

Per Socket: Commvault determines its socket count based on the hypervisor’s interpretation and reporting of the underlying
socket count. Only sockets that are associated with active backup/protection policies are counted against the Commvault
License allocation. At the time of a backup/archive job, Commvault identifies the hosts that are running the virtual machines
to be protected and polls for a socket count on that host. Each time a unique host is identified in the job, those sockets will
be added to the total count.

Per Virtual Machine (VM): Commvault counts all virtual machines that are protected under an active subclient. Virtual
machines that are included in multiple subclients will be counted uniquely against each subclient.

11
What is not Counted:

Per Socket: Sockets within hosts that do not have actively protected virtual machines associated with them will not have
their socket count added to the total.

Per Virtual Machine (VM): Virtual machines that have been protected, but have had their subclient, backup set, or top-
level client deactivated will not count against the overall VM total measured against the license meters.

What is Granted:

All Commvault agents and infrastructure pieces (Commserve, Media Agent, Web Services, etc) required to deliver the
functionality associated with the given Virtual Backup & Recovery Package will be granted in unlimited installation quantities,
so long as the number of VM’s or Sockets (as licensed) is not exceeded. Data Capacity will not be measured against any
licensing once Per-Socket or Per-VM Licensing is introduced into the Commcell Environment.

Product-Specific Notes:

VM Virtual Application Support: VM Virtual Application Support (included with the Virtual Protection Advanced and
Complete Packages) allows for Application-Assisted VM Backup, which employs a light plug-in software package within the
12
VM. This plug-in is not a full-fledged Intelligent Data Agent, and the Application Support included within the VM package does
not grant rights to conduct full independent application protection from within the VM itself.

VM Complete: The VM Backup & Recovery Complete package is a bundle of products that includes VM Backup & Recovery
Advanced, along with 10 Active Disaster Recovery Suite instances and 10 VM Archive Licenses. Please review the Advanced
Solution Section for further details on Active Disaster Recovery Suite Licensing

VM Archiving: Archived Virtual Machines are counted as VMs that have been stored in the Commvault Content Store and
functionally removed from the production VM Datastore using the Archive Management Features of the Virtual Server Agent.
Note that all resource management and relocation features are functional within the base VM Protection Options, and only
execution of an Archive Operation will result in Archive License Consumption. The Archive License will be recovered to the
pool once the Archived VM is removed from the Content Store (through retention policies).

Mixing License Types:

As part of the Solution Set Licensing program, users are required to choose a license metric for the entirety of the virtual
environment being licensed. In the case of Virtual Backup & Recovery, all VM’s or all Sockets that are protected by
Commvault must be licensed at the same level (Foundation/Advanced) and in the same metric model (VM/Socket). Virtual
Machines may not be selectively chosen to count against traditional capacity models unless a different protection mechanism
is utilized (for example, using traditional in-server agents as opposed to the Virtual Server Agent).

In terms of feature level (Foundation, Advanced, and Complete), Foundation level cannot be mixed with the other levels of
licensing. However Advanced and Complete may be mixed, so long as the environment is licensed per VM. Socket Customers
may not introduce VM Complete into their environment, as Complete is only licensed per VM.

VM Archiving, as a standalone Per-VM license may be mixed with Per-Socket protection licenses to support archive operations
on a per-VM basis.

Full mixing of this licensing is allowed with any of the other Solution Set License options (For File/App/NAS, Endpoint, or
Mailbox).

What is Counted:

Users: Commvault counts individual user accounts associated with Desktops/Laptops that are under management, along
with uniquely identified users that are granted rights to the solutions above (which may not have a system under
management).

As Endpoint devices are protected, a list of user accounts associated to that device (as defined in the Commcell) is aggregated
and measured against the licensing meters. Each user is effectively granted rights to install Commvault software on up to five
unique devices. However, one device shared by five indivuduals with active accounts will be counted as five users.

What is not Counted:

Users that have been deactivated (removing access rights) and removed from the Commvault Management Infrastructure will
not be counted. Similarly if all a user’s devices have been deactivated from management/protection, that user will also no
longer be counted against the totals.

What is Granted:

Endpoint Solutions: All Commvault agents and infrastructure pieces (Commserve, Media Agent, Web Services, etc)
required to deliver the functionality associated with the given Endpoint Backup or sharing package will be granted in unlimited
installation quantities, so long as the number of users (as licensed) is not exceeded. Data capacity will not be measured
against any licensing that is associated to a user account once this license type is introduced into the Commcell Environment.

Product-Specific Notes:

Desktops/Laptops without User Assignment: In cases where an end-user owner has not been assigned to a given
device, the device may not register under the Endpoint Licensing Grants. In order to properly account for these devices,
ownership must be granted to either an end-user or an administrative account (which would require a license).

What is Counted:

Mailboxes: Commvault counts individual any mailbox entity (user or resource) that is actively under granular management.
For basic protection and archving using Commvault Onepass, any mailboxes that are associated with an active subclient will
be counted once Onepass operations have been performed against it. This also includes mailboxes that may not be active
within the mail server, but have PST data that has been collected and placed under active management.

In a compliance solution, where journaling is enabled and archiving is being executed against the journal mailbox, any
mailboxes that are associated with the journal account will be counted against the Commvault Mailbox total, even if that
mailbox is not actively being archived or protected. Note that any mailbox that is archived directly and also connected to an
archived journal will only be counted once.

Personal Cloud Storage: The Commvault E-mail Solution can also be deployed to protect Personal Cloud Storage (i.e.,
Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive). These accounts are accessed using a user’s e-mail address, and as such, if these entities
are protected, a Mailbox License will be consumed against the total for that Mailbox Account.
15
What is not Counted:

Mailboxes that have been removed from active management will not count against the overall total. Users who wish to
ensure these mailboxes are excluded should actively remove them from any configured subclients. They will only be removed
once a synthetic full backup is executed against that subclient.

What is Granted:

E-mail Solutions: All Commvault agents and infrastructure pieces (Commserve, Media Agent, Web Services, etc) required
to deliver the functionality associated with the given e-mail package will be granted in unlimited installation quantities, so long
as the number of mailboxes (as licensed) is not exceeded. Data capacity for mailboxes will not be measured against any TB
meters once this license type is introduced into the Commcell Environment.

objects based on the source of the data is somewhat limited. To address this, Commvault embeds significant object grants
with each Endpoint and Mailbox license to offset any consumption of objects that originates from these workloads.

What is Granted?

Search Infrastructure: All software pertaining to the indexing and searching of Commvault-Managed data. This includes
Search Node software as well as the Search Console.

Case Manager: Case Manager additionally grants the rights to utilize the specialized Case Manager Interface for advanced
Legal-focused features.

What is Counted?

Operating Instance: Any Physical or Virtual Operating Environment with a distinct Server name or identity along with one
replicated copy of that environment. Excluding OS/Platforms that are solely dedicated to hosting other Operating
environments (i.e., dedicated Hypervisors). Examples of OI’s include (but are not limited to): Virtual Machines, Physical
Servers (non Hypervisor), Cloud Compute Instances, etc.

IntelliSnap and Replicate Platform Enabler – Exception for Virtual Protection: The Snap Enabler for Virtual Server Protection,
leveraging the Virtual Server Agent, will be counted based on the number of Virtual Server Agents that will be enabled for
IntelliSnap. The individual Virtual Machines protected by the VSA will not be individually counted and licensed for IntelliSnap.

Active Copy Management is counted as any OI that is using enhanced failover options using either the Live Sync feature to
a replicated standby system or Continuous Data Replication to an online target. If more than one Active Target Copy is
maintained, multiple OI Licenses will be required.

Premium Operations Reporting: When Premium Operations Reporting is used within a Commvault Environment, every
Operating Instance under Commvault Management must be licensed.

What is not Counted?

Active Copy Management: Live Sync Pairs that have been created, but are not actively synchronized do not count against
the license requirement. Users wishing to create recovery plans without active synchronization will not have licenses
consumed on these inactive pairs.

What is Granted?

Please Note that Active Copy Management and Premium Operations Reporting are add-ons to other Commvault Data
Protection/Archive Solutions. These two products cannot function as standalone products. Rights granted with these licenses
are to enhance underlying Commvault Solutions.

Cloud Orchestration grants full use of any Commvault infrastructure necessary to enable the Orchestration Solution. This
typically consists of (at a minimum) a Commserve, a Media Agent, and a Virtual Server Agent. Orchestration does not confer
backup or archive rights. Customers wishing to protect or archive data in conjunction with the Orchestration Solution should
license those features separately.
