46 6th grade students participated in a survey based on my teaching abilities. The data that I
have compiled tells me a lot about my teaching behaviors, and the feedback they wrote was
extremely helpful and positive.
The top ESE Model Student Survey questions I received the highest ratings on are the
following:
Question 1: My teacher demonstrates that mistakes are a part of learning. (41/46)
Students either wrote SA or A for this question.
To me this is very motivating. I never shoot down a student’s question or give
them negative feedback on something they have performed wrong. I am always seeking
to word my sentences to be constructive and positive. This makes the students feel as
though even if they didn’t do something correctly, they didn’t necessarily do it wrong. No
student is going to be perfect at everything they try, so it up to me to push them in the
right direction. Even when I mess up my instructions or fail a demonstration, I let my
students know, hey, it’s all part of the process of learning, and that I am still learning a
lot myself.

Question 3: My teacher uses open-ended questions that enable me to think of multiple

possible answers. (38/46) Students either wrote SA or A for this question.
Like I stated before, I am always wording my questions to be positive and
developmentally appropriate for the students. I want them to think, and think hard, but I
don’t give away answers too easily. The more we get our students to think before they
act, the more productive they will be in school and in the real world. I don’t like my
students doing something unless they know why and how it benefits them. They should
always know those two things, or else they might think the activity is boring or pointless.
Students should be able to explore the possibilities and dead-ends of problem solving.
This mental exercise is just as important as the physical exercise they do in class.

The bottom ESE Model Student Survey questions I received the lowest ratings on are the
following:

Question 4: If I finish my work early in class, my teacher has me do more challenging

work. (19/46) Students either wrote D or SD.

This question was confusing to several students, they thought that “more
challenging” was a negative thing, not a positive one that builds character and strength.
I am always pushing my students to try to better themselves mentally and physically. If
a pair of two students are bumping a volleyball to each other, I root for them and tell
them to beat their previous score. If a student is belly flopping off of the side of the pool I
keep trying to get their diving technique correct. I am constantly making sure all
students are actively engaged and participating, even during free time.

Question 7: Our class stays on task and does not waste time. (17/46) Students either
wrote D or SD.
 I spend a few minutes of each class period warming up to the students and
getting their nerves out. I talk to all students and get them in the mindset of having fun
and positivity, instead of schoolwork and “this is stupid”. I joke with my students, and
make sure that they have had a couple minutes to chat with their friends before starting
my real instruction. Yes, sometimes I get off task, but I can quickly regain control of the
class and steer us back in the right direction. I guess it is a little bit of my personality
taking over, and I need to work on it. I do not regret building a positive rapport with my
students however, because doing so builds trust. If there is no trust between a student
and their teacher, they will not listen to or respect said teacher. I wouldn’t necessarily
say we waste time in our classes, all I am doing is providing insight and giving honest
facts about life and health.
