We use tpd to denote the propagation delay along a transmission line (if the
line length is l, then tpd = l/c, where c is the speed of light in the medium
surrounding the transmission line.
Consider a transmission line with Z0 = 50Ω, length l = 50cm and tpd =
10ns. It is driven from the left by a voltage source Vs (t) with source resistance
Rs , and is terminated on the right by a load element. The line is assumed to
be quiet for t ≤ 0 (that is, V and I in the line are 0 for t ≤ 0).
1. If Vs (t) = u(t), the unit-step, find the response of the line at the source
and the load end for the following combinations of source and load.

(a) Rs = 0Ω, and the load is a resistance of value Rl = 100Ω.

(b) Rs = 100Ω and the load is an open circuit.
(c) Rs = 50Ω and the load is a capacitor with capacitance 10pF .
(d) Rs = 50Ω and the load is an inductor with inductance 1nH.
2. If Vs (t) = δ(t) (where δ(t) is the unit implulse or the Dirac delta-function),
find the response at the right end of the line in terms of the reflection
coefficients at the right and the left. (hint: the impulse response will be a
sequence of scaled impulses).
3. When Rs = 30Ω and Rl = ∞, find the response at the right end of the line
when Vs (t) = u(t)sin(109 t). Use the impulse response and convolution.
